The essay becomes the unit of work
Up to Grade 7, good paragraphs made a good answer. From Grade 8 an essay is judged as a whole: whether it argues one thing across four or five paragraphs and arrives somewhere it could not have started.
That is a planning skill rather than a writing one. A student who decides their argument before writing produces a coherent essay in an hour; a student who discovers it while writing produces five competent paragraphs pointing in different directions, and the marks reflect the second.
Feature-spotting
The habit that survives from Grade 7 is listing devices — a metaphor here, alliteration there — because they are findable and produce visible work on the page. Examiners at every level above this one give it almost nothing.
The question worth training is why that word and not the obvious alternative. Comparing the writer's choice against a plainer substitute makes the effect visible, which is a more reliable route into analysis than asking a student to state what a technique 'creates'.
Comparing two writers
Comparison arrives properly this year, and the usual attempt is two descriptions side by side with 'whereas' between them. That is a pair of summaries rather than a comparison, and it caps the mark early.
What lifts it is comparing on a single point at a time — both writers present fear, but one does it through short sentences and the other through detail — and then judging which lands better and why. GCSE and IGCSE both weight this heavily, so it is worth getting right a year before it counts.

My child writes plenty but the essays score poorly. Why?
Usually because there is no line of argument holding the paragraphs together. Each one may be competent while the essay as a whole says nothing in particular. Deciding the argument before writing rather than discovering it while writing fixes more marks than any amount of extra practice.
How should a comparison of two texts be structured?
One point at a time, with both writers in the same paragraph, rather than one text described and then the other. Compare on a shared idea — how each presents fear, or authority — then judge which is more effective and say why. Two summaries side by side score poorly however well written.
