  • Write in paragraphs, varying sentence length and using commas to separate clauses.
  • Adapt writing to a purpose — to persuade, inform, explain or entertain — and edit their own work.

طلبہ کہاں اٹکتے ہیں

  • Comma splices: joining two complete sentences with a comma instead of a full stop or a connective.
  • Answering an inference question by retelling the plot instead of giving a reason with evidence.

Answering what the text does not say

Retrieval questions have an answer sitting in the text. Inference questions do not, and Grade 5 is where they start to dominate — how does the character feel, why did she do that, what does this suggest about the setting.

Asked one, most students retell the plot, because the plot is what they are sure of. The shape that scores is a claim plus the words that support it, and it is a two-part answer the student has to be taught to build rather than one they will produce by reading more.

The comma splice

Grade 5 teaches commas between clauses, and immediately students start using a comma where a full stop belongs. It is the price of the new tool, and it appears in almost every book at some point this year.

The check is quick: read each half on its own. If both halves are complete sentences, a comma is not strong enough to hold them, and the fix is a full stop, a connective or a semicolon. Students who learn that test at ten do not carry the splice into Grade 7 essays.

Paragraphs, and writing on purpose

Longer writing needs shape. A paragraph is one idea with its supporting detail, and a new one starts when the idea, the place, the time or the speaker changes — a rule concrete enough to apply while writing rather than after.

The other Grade 5 demand is audience. A persuasive letter, an explanation and a story are not the same task, and a student who writes all three the same way is not being marked down for grammar. This is also where the presentation work pays off, because saying something aloud to a group exposes whether it is convincing.

عام سوالات

What English should a Grade 5 student know before secondary school?

Reading longer texts independently and summarising across paragraphs, writing in organised paragraphs with varied sentence length, using commas between clauses, adapting writing to persuade, inform, explain or entertain, and editing their own work.

My child gets full marks on comprehension until the last questions. Why?

The last questions are usually inference rather than retrieval, so the answer is not written in the text. Students retell the plot because that is what they are certain of. The answer that scores is a reason plus a short quotation that supports it, and that structure has to be taught.

What is a comma splice?

Two complete sentences joined by a comma — 'it was late, we went home'. It appears the moment students learn to use commas between clauses. Reading each half separately catches it: if both stand alone, they need a full stop, a connective or a semicolon.
