Meeting Shakespeare for the first time
Twelve is young for early modern English, and students who are told the language is beautiful before they can read it conclude that the problem is them. It is more useful to admit that the first encounter is genuinely difficult.
What works is hearing it before reading it, and reading a short scene many times rather than a whole play once. Comprehension follows familiarity here, in the same order it did with phonics six years earlier.
Naming a technique is not analysis
'The writer uses a metaphor' is the single most common sentence in a Grade 7 essay and it earns almost nothing. Spotting the device is the easy part; the marks are for what it does to the reader and why it belongs at that point in the text.
We work to a fixed shape until it becomes habit — what the writer did, the short quotation, the effect, and why it matters here. Students dislike the scaffold for about a month and then stop needing it.
Longer writing, older errors
Comma splices and tense drift both reappear this year, in students who fixed them in Grade 5. That is not regression; the pieces are longer now, and errors return when attention is spread over five paragraphs instead of one.
Simple, compound and complex sentence structure is the antidote rather than the cause. A student who can name what they have built can check it, and proofreading for one thing at a time catches far more than reading through for general quality.

My child finds Shakespeare impossible. Is that normal at twelve?
Yes. Early modern English is genuinely hard on a first reading and pretending otherwise makes students think the difficulty is personal. Hearing a scene performed before reading it, and returning to a short scene repeatedly, works better than covering a whole play once.
Why does my child lose marks when the analysis looks right?
Usually because the technique is named and its effect is not explained. Identifying a metaphor is the low-value half of the task; the marks are for what it does to the reader and why it sits where it does. A fixed four-part structure fixes this within a term for most students.
