Active and Passive Voice

   Find who is doing the action

   'The dog chased the ball' → the dog acts → active

   If the subject of the sentence is performing the verb, the sentence is active. If the subject is having something done to it, it is passive. This is the definition, and everything else is a test for it.

   Look for 'to be' plus a past participle

   was chased, is written, have been completed

   The passive always contains a form of the verb 'to be' — is, was, were, been — followed by a past participle. Spotting that pair is the quickest structural test.

   Try adding 'by zombies'

   'The ball was chased ___ by zombies' → fits → passive

   If the phrase 'by zombies' can be added after the verb and the sentence still makes grammatical sense, it is passive. It is an informal test and it works reliably.

   Convert passive to active by finding the doer

   'The essay was written by Ali' → 'Ali wrote the essay'

   Move the doer to the front, make the verb act directly, and the object follows. The active version is almost always shorter, which is one reason it is usually preferred.

   Notice when the passive hides the doer

   'Mistakes were made' — by whom?

   The passive allows the actor to be omitted entirely. This is sometimes legitimate and sometimes evasive, and recognising the difference is a genuine reading skill as well as a writing one.

Neither voice is simply better

Active voice is usually clearer and more direct, which is why most writing guidance recommends it as a default. It is shorter, it names who is responsible, and it reads with more energy.

But the passive is the right choice when the doer is unknown, unimportant, or deliberately not the focus. 'The window was broken overnight' is correct when nobody knows who broke it, and scientific writing uses the passive to keep attention on the procedure rather than the person.

Why science writing uses the passive

'The solution was heated to 60°C' keeps the focus on what was done rather than who did it, which suits a method section where the procedure should be reproducible by anyone. This convention is why students meet the passive most heavily in science lessons.

It is worth knowing that the convention has softened, and many journals now accept 'we heated the solution'. Students should follow whatever their own subject requires rather than applying one rule everywhere.

The passive as a way of avoiding responsibility

'Mistakes were made' is the classic example: grammatically correct, and carefully silent about who made them. Political and corporate communication uses this construction routinely, and noticing it is a useful critical reading skill.

This makes the topic more interesting than a grammar exercise. Asking students to rewrite an evasive passive sentence in the active voice makes the omission visible, and they tend to remember the distinction afterwards.

How we teach voice

We use the 'by zombies' test because it is memorable and it works. Students who have a reliable test stop guessing, and the identification is most of what exam questions require.

We then spend time on when each voice is appropriate rather than declaring the passive to be an error. Blanket advice to avoid it produces students who write awkward active sentences in contexts where the passive was correct.
