Grade 8 Mathematics Tutoring
Live online Grade 8 maths in groups of five: real numbers, cube roots, variation, factorisation, polynomial division, y = mx + c, similarity and Pythagoras.
مختصر جواب
Grade 8 is the last year before examination courses, and it builds the algebra they assume. The year covers sets, real numbers, squares, cubes and their roots, direct and inverse variation, financial mathematics, factorisation and polynomial division, graphing y = mx + c, congruence and similarity, Pythagoras, transformations and probability.

- Factorise algebraic expressions and divide a polynomial by a linear expression.
- Plot the graph of y = mx + c and interpret the gradient and the y-intercept.
- State and apply Pythagoras' theorem to find a missing side of a right-angled triangle.
طلبہ کہاں اٹکتے ہیں
- Factorising quadratics — finding the pair of numbers that both multiply to the constant and add to the middle term.
- Applying Pythagoras when the unknown is a shorter side rather than the hypotenuse, and adding the squares instead of subtracting.
The last year nothing is examined
Nothing in Grade 8 appears on a certificate, which is precisely why it is the most efficient year to repair anything. A gap closed here costs a few weeks; the same gap closed in Grade 10 is being closed in competition with a syllabus that will not pause.
Most students who arrive in a panic during an examination year have a Grade 7 or Grade 8 gap sitting underneath the Grade 10 problem, and the visible symptom is rarely where the cause is.
Factorising is a search, not a formula
Expanding brackets is mechanical and students are usually fine with it. Factorising runs the same process backwards, and there is no procedure that produces the answer — you have to find two numbers that multiply to one value and add to another.
That search is uncomfortable for students who have been rewarded for following methods, and the discomfort is the point rather than a problem. Working through the factor pairs systematically instead of guessing is what turns it from luck into technique, and it is the skill Grade 9 and 10 algebra is built on.
Pythagoras when the unknown is a shorter side
Most students can find the hypotenuse. Given the hypotenuse and asked for a shorter side, a large number add the squares anyway, because that is the version of the theorem they practised.
The reliable check is size: the hypotenuse is always the longest side, so an answer larger than it is wrong before any arithmetic is examined. Labelling the triangle before substituting, every time, prevents most of these errors from occurring at all.
y = mx + c is more than a graph
Grade 8 is where a straight line acquires an equation whose parts mean something — m is the rate of change and c is where it starts. Read that way, it stops being a plotting exercise.
It is also the first time algebra and geometry describe the same object, which is the idea the whole of coordinate geometry and later calculus rests on. Students who understand gradient as rate rather than as steepness carry it straight into physics.

عام سوالات
What maths should a Grade 8 student know?
Sets, real numbers, squares, cubes and their roots, direct and inverse variation, financial mathematics, factorisation and polynomial division, graphing y = mx + c, congruent and similar figures, Pythagoras' theorem, transformations, and frequency distributions and probability.
Is Grade 8 an important year if nothing is examined?
It is the most useful year for catching up, precisely because nothing in it is examined. Everything Grade 9 and 10 assume is taught or consolidated here, and a gap fixed now costs a fraction of what the same gap costs during an examination course.
Why does my child get Pythagoras wrong when the answer is a shorter side?
Because they practised finding the hypotenuse and apply the same step regardless. When the hypotenuse is known, you subtract rather than add. The quickest guard is a size check: any answer longer than the hypotenuse is wrong before the arithmetic is even reviewed.
