Long division is where the tables bill arrives

Almost every student who cannot do long division can divide perfectly well. What defeats them is that each step demands a multiplication fact instantly, and if those facts have to be worked out, a four-step problem becomes twenty small problems and the thread breaks around step two.

We check table recall before teaching the method rather than after. Where the tables are the real problem, fixing them usually fixes the division without the division being retaught at all.

0.25 is not larger than 0.7

Decimals arrive looking like whole numbers with a dot in them, and students read them that way. Twenty-five is bigger than seven, so 0.25 is judged bigger than 0.7, and the reasoning is consistent even though the answer is wrong.

The repair is to read the columns rather than the digits — two tenths against seven tenths — and to line the numbers up vertically so the tenths sit above the tenths. Students who never make that switch carry the same error into percentages in Grade 5 and into money for years after.

Factors, primes, and the point of them

Prime factorisation and divisibility rules feel like trivia at nine, and they are taught here for what they unlock later: simplifying fractions, HCF and LCM in Grade 5, and factorising algebraic expressions in Grade 8.

Worth being honest with a student about that. A topic with no visible use is much harder to care about, and 'this is the machinery for cancelling fractions' is both true and more motivating than 'it is on the syllabus'.

Why does my child struggle with long division?

Usually because the times tables underneath it are not automatic. Every step needs a multiplication fact immediately, and without recall the method becomes too many small calculations to hold together. Testing table recall is more useful than reteaching the division.

My child thinks 0.25 is bigger than 0.7. How do I explain it?

Read the first decimal place aloud: two tenths against seven tenths. Writing both with the same number of decimal places, 0.25 and 0.70, and lining up the columns makes the comparison visible. The error comes from reading decimals as whole numbers, which is reasonable and wrong.
