Perimeter and Area

Perimeter is the distance around, area is the space inside. Formulas for rectangles, triangles, parallelograms and trapeziums, plus compound shapes and units.

مختصر جواب

Perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape, measured in units of length. Area is the amount of surface inside it, measured in square units. Confusing the two is the most common error in the topic, and the units are what give it away.

طریقہ، مرحلہ وار

  1. Perimeter: add every side

    Rectangle 8 cm by 5 cm → 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 cm

Walk around the shape and total the lengths. For a rectangle this shortens to 2(l + w), but adding the sides works for every shape including irregular ones, which the shortcut does not.

  2. Area of a rectangle: multiply the sides

    8 × 5 = 40 cm²

Multiplying length by width counts how many unit squares fit inside. The units become cm² because two lengths were multiplied — the squared unit is a consequence of the arithmetic, not a label added afterwards.

  3. Triangle: half of base times height

    base 10 cm, height 6 cm → ½ × 10 × 6 = 30 cm²

A triangle is exactly half the rectangle that encloses it. The height must be perpendicular to the base, not the sloping side — using the slant length is the single most common error in triangle area questions.

  4. Parallelogram and trapezium

    parallelogram: b × h. trapezium: ½(a + b) × h

A parallelogram has the same area as a rectangle of the same base and perpendicular height. A trapezium averages its two parallel sides and multiplies by the height between them — which is the rectangle formula applied to the average width.

  5. Compound shapes: split, then add

    L-shape → two rectangles → 40 + 18 = 58 cm²

Divide the shape into rectangles and triangles, find each area, and total. Subtracting a missing piece from a larger rectangle works equally well and is often quicker — either is acceptable as long as the working shows which.

The units settle it

Perimeter is a length, so it is measured in cm or m. Area is a surface, so it is measured in cm² or m². If an answer is in cm² and the question asked for the distance around a garden, the wrong quantity has been found — and that check takes no time at all.

The distinction is also worth anchoring physically: perimeter is the fence around a field, area is the grass inside it. Students who can name a real version of each stop mixing them up far sooner than students working from definitions.

  • Perimeter — distance around, in cm or m
  • Area — surface inside, in cm² or m²
  • Rectangle: A = l × w
  • Triangle: A = ½ × b × h, h perpendicular
  • Trapezium: A = ½(a + b) × h

The height must be perpendicular

In every area formula that mentions height, it means the perpendicular distance — straight up from the base at a right angle. Exam diagrams deliberately include the slant length as well, precisely because students reach for whichever number is nearest the word 'height'.

For a triangle with base 10, perpendicular height 6 and a slant side of 8, the area is 30 and not 40. Marking the perpendicular on the diagram before choosing numbers eliminates the error.

Same perimeter, different area

A rectangle of 1 by 11 and one of 6 by 6 both have perimeter 24, but their areas are 11 and 36. Perimeter does not determine area, and there is no way to convert one into the other without knowing the shape.

This surprises students and is worth demonstrating, because it kills the instinct that a bigger perimeter means a bigger area. It also introduces optimisation questions, where a fixed length of fencing encloses the most area as a square.

How we teach perimeter and area

We check the units on every answer, out loud, for the first few weeks. A student who says 'forty centimetres squared' has confirmed they found an area, and the habit catches the wrong-quantity error before any marking does.

We teach compound shapes by both splitting and subtracting, and let students choose. Being able to see a shape as a big rectangle with a bite taken out is genuinely useful, and it is often much faster than dividing it into three pieces.

عام سوالات

What is the difference between perimeter and area?

Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape, measured in cm or m. Area is the surface inside it, measured in cm² or m². The units are the quickest way to check you have found the right one.

How do you find the area of a triangle?

Half the base times the perpendicular height — ½ × b × h. The height must be at right angles to the base, not the sloping side. Using the slant length instead is the commonest error in triangle questions.

What is the formula for the area of a trapezium?

Half the sum of the parallel sides, multiplied by the distance between them: ½(a + b) × h. It is effectively the rectangle formula applied to the average of the two widths.

How do you find the area of a compound shape?

Split it into rectangles and triangles, work out each area, and add them. Alternatively, take a larger rectangle and subtract the missing piece — often quicker, and equally acceptable if the working shows what you did.

Do two shapes with the same perimeter have the same area?

No. A 1 by 11 rectangle and a 6 by 6 square both have perimeter 24, but their areas are 11 and 36. Perimeter tells you nothing about area on its own.
