Grade 7
Grade 7 Online Tutoring
Live online classes for Grade 7, typically age 12. Rational numbers, algebraic expressions, proportion and financial maths across five subjects.
The short answer
Grade 7 is where algebra stops being an introduction and starts being the language of the subject. Rational numbers, expressions, proportion and financial mathematics are its core. Learning Loft teaches all five subjects online in groups of at most five, at typical age twelve.
Algebra becomes the working language
In Grade 6 algebra was a topic. In Grade 7 it becomes the notation everything else is written in — proportion, geometry, the science that follows. A student who is still translating each expression back into arithmetic before they can work with it is carrying an overhead into every question.
This is the year that overhead becomes expensive, and also the last year it is cheap to remove.
Proportion connects everything
Direct and inverse proportion, ratio, percentage change and financial mathematics — profit, loss, discount, taxes, and in the Pakistani curriculum Zakat and Ushr — are all the same idea in different clothing.
Students who see them as separate topics learn four methods. Students who see the shared structure learn one, and it is the one that reappears at GCSE, in physics, and in every real financial decision they will make.
Where Grade 7 students get stuck
Negative numbers in algebraic contexts, and the difference between an expression and an equation. Both are places where a student can produce right answers for a while by pattern-matching, and then fail suddenly when the pattern changes.
We look for that specifically, because it does not show up in marks until it is well established.

Common questions
What maths topics are covered in Grade 7?
Rational numbers, squares and square roots, direct and inverse proportion, financial mathematics, algebraic expressions, linear equations and their graphs, polygons and circles, surface area and volume, and basic statistics and probability.
Why is Grade 7 algebra harder than Grade 6?
Because it stops being a topic in its own right and becomes the notation the rest of the subject is written in. A student who has not made letters feel natural is now doing an extra translation step in every question, in geometry and science as well as in maths.
How many subjects do you teach at Grade 7?
Five — mathematics, science, English, history and geography — in 60-minute sessions, three to five times a week, in groups of at most five.
