Letters start standing for numbers
The jump from arithmetic to algebra is the largest conceptual step in school mathematics, and it happens here. A student who has spent five years finding answers is now asked to work with a quantity whose value is not known and may not need to be.
Students who meet this as a new set of rules to memorise tend to stall within a year. Students who understand that a letter is just a number whose name we do not know yet keep moving. Which of those happens is largely decided by how Grade 6 is taught.
Two more subjects, and more to organise
History and geography arrive, and with them a different kind of work: reading a source, taking a position, supporting it. That is a writing skill as much as a subject skill, and it transfers straight back into English.
The other change is logistical. Five subjects with different teachers and different deadlines is the first real test of a student's own organisation, and it catches out plenty of capable eleven-year-olds.
Science becomes three sciences
Biology, chemistry and physics start to separate, and practical work starts to carry method — variables, fair tests, recording. Answers now need reasoning rather than recall, which is the same shift happening in mathematics.

History and geography join mathematics, science and English, taking the timetable to five subjects. Science also begins separating into biology, chemistry and physics rather than being taught as one general subject.
My child was fine in primary and is struggling in Grade 6. Why?
Two common reasons. Algebra is a genuine conceptual jump and rewards understanding rather than the pattern-spotting that worked in primary; and five subjects with five sets of deadlines is an organisational load that primary never imposed. Both are fixable, and neither means the student has stopped being capable.
How long are Grade 6 classes?
60 minutes, three to five times a week, in groups of at most five. The step up from 45 minutes matches the longer reasoning the work now requires.
