The short answer
Grade 5 is the last year of primary and the one middle school assumes. Decimals, percentages and the link between them are its core, and a student who leaves Grade 5 shaky on those starts Grade 6 already behind. We teach it in groups of four.
Fractions, decimals and percentages are one topic
Taught as three separate things, they take three times as long and never quite connect. Taught as three notations for the same quantity, each one reinforces the others and the conversions stop needing to be memorised.
The test of whether it has landed is whether a student can say, without pausing, that 3/8, 0.375 and 37.5% are the same number — and explain why.
The year middle school is built on
Grade 6 introduces algebra and formal science, and both assume Grade 5 arithmetic is automatic. A student still working out percentages slowly will find that every Grade 7 proportion question costs them twice what it should.
This is the strongest argument for tutoring at Grade 5 rather than waiting: the gaps are still small, and closing them now is cheaper in effort than closing them under exam pressure at fourteen.
Working without being watched
Grade 5 is also where a student should start managing their own work — checking an answer before handing it in, noticing their own error, asking a specific question rather than saying they do not understand. We push on that deliberately, because middle school will assume it.

Common questions
What should a Grade 5 student know before starting middle school?
Fluent times tables, written methods for all four operations, confident conversion between fractions, decimals and percentages, and basic area, perimeter and data handling. Those are the assumptions Grade 6 algebra and science are built on.
Is Grade 5 a good time to start tutoring?
It is one of the best. Gaps are still small and quick to close, there is no exam pressure yet, and the arithmetic fixed here is what every middle-school topic will lean on. Starting in Grade 9 means fixing the same gaps with far less time.
How do fractions, decimals and percentages relate?
They are three ways of writing the same number. Divide the top of a fraction by the bottom for the decimal, multiply the decimal by 100 for the percentage. Three eighths, 0.375 and 37.5% are identical amounts.
