The short answer
Grade 8 is the last year before the exam years, and the quietest place to fix things. Linear equations, Pythagoras and formal geometry are its core, and what a student carries out of it is what Grade 9 will build the SSC, GCSE or IGCSE course on.
Nothing in Grade 8 goes on a certificate, which is exactly why it is the most efficient year to do repair work. A gap closed here costs a few weeks; the same gap closed in Grade 10 is being closed in competition with a syllabus that will not pause.
Most of the students who arrive to us panicking in Grade 10 have a Grade 7 or Grade 8 gap underneath the Grade 10 problem.
Linear equations and their solution, Pythagoras' theorem, formal geometry and proof-like reasoning, and the beginnings of the algebraic manipulation that GCSE and IGCSE will assume from day one.
Pythagoras is worth singling out. It is the first result students meet that is proved rather than asserted, and it is the gateway to trigonometry in the year that follows.
By the end of Grade 8, many families are choosing between Matriculation, O Level and IGCSE. It is worth deciding on the student rather than on the label — the cheaper national route is the right answer for most Pakistani students, and the international route is right for those heading abroad.

It is the most useful year for catching up, precisely because nothing in it is examined. Everything Grade 9 and 10 assume is taught or consolidated here, and a gap fixed now costs a fraction of what the same gap costs during an exam course.
