What Is a Grade Boundary?

The minimum raw mark for a grade, decided after every script is marked rather than before the exam. Why it shifts each series and how to use last year's.

Grade boundary

A grade boundary is the lowest raw mark that earns a particular grade, fixed after marking so that the same grade represents the same standard across series.

الإجابة باختصار

A grade boundary is the minimum raw mark needed for a grade. It is decided after every script has been marked, not before the exam is sat, so that a slightly harder paper needs slightly fewer marks for the same grade. Boundaries are published on results day.

مثال

A grade 4 on Higher and a grade 4 on Foundation are the same grade, reached from very different raw marks.

A Higher paper is built from harder questions, so the mark needed for grade 4 on it is a much smaller share of the total than the mark needed for grade 4 on Foundation. Nothing unfair is taking place. The boundary is the thing that translates a raw mark on one particular set of questions into a standard, so when the questions change the translation has to change with them. That is the whole mechanism: the number moves precisely so that the meaning of the grade does not.

Why the number cannot be decided in advance

Two papers written to the same specification are never identical in difficulty. Question wording, the combination of topics, how much reading each question demands — all of it moves a little from one series to the next, and no amount of care in writing the paper removes the variation entirely.

If boundaries were published in advance, that variation would land on the students. A slightly awkward paper would depress a whole cohort's grades, and an accessible one would inflate them, so a grade 6 would mean something different every June. Setting the boundary afterwards puts the variation where it belongs: on the number, not on the candidates.

The decision is made at an awarding meeting once marking is complete. Senior examiners look at scripts sitting around the candidate marks under consideration alongside statistical evidence about the cohort, and place the boundary where the work matches the standard from previous years. The principle behind that statistical evidence is usually summarised as comparable outcomes: a cohort of similar ability should get broadly similar results, so a shift in results has to be explained by something other than how the paper turned out.

What moves, what does not, and what is not comparable

The grade is set on the total across all the papers in the qualification, not on each paper individually. A weak Paper 1 followed by a strong Paper 3 is arithmetic rather than a failed component, and boards that publish per-paper figures publish them for information — the grade comes from the sum.

Boundaries are not comparable across anything. Different tiers have different boundaries for the grades they share. Different boards have different boundaries for the same subject, so an Edexcel figure tells you nothing about AQA. And boundaries in reformed GCSEs in England are given in raw marks, not in the uniform marks that older modular qualifications used, so old advice about UMS does not transfer.

Using last year's boundaries without being misled by them

Published boundaries from previous series are genuinely useful for setting a target, and genuinely dangerous when treated as a promise. They tell you roughly what a grade has cost recently. They cannot tell you what it will cost this time, because this time's paper has not been marked.

The sensible use is to take the recent figures for your board and tier, look at the range across the last few series rather than a single year, and aim comfortably above the top of it. A student who trains to hit last year's grade 7 boundary exactly has left themselves no margin for the one thing nobody can predict.

أسئلة شائعة

When are grade boundaries decided?

After all the papers have been marked and before results day. Marking has to be complete because the decision depends on seeing how candidates actually performed on the questions as set. This is why nobody, including teachers, can tell you the boundary while you are still revising for the exam.

Why do grade boundaries change every year?

Because the papers do. Two papers written to the same specification differ slightly in difficulty, and the boundary absorbs that difference so the grade keeps its meaning. A lower boundary is evidence that a paper was harder than usual, not evidence that the grade was easier to get.

Are grade boundaries the same for every exam board?

No. Each board sets its own boundaries for its own papers, and comparing them across boards is meaningless because they are marks on different question papers out of different totals. Comparing the two tiers within a single board is equally meaningless for exactly the same reason, which is why the only figures worth looking at are the ones for the specification you are actually entered for.

Can I use last year's boundaries to predict my grade?

Only as a rough guide. Use several recent series rather than one, use the figures for your own board and tier, and add a margin above the highest of them. Boundaries move by a few marks in either direction, and a few marks is exactly the distance most borderline candidates are away from the next grade.

Is the boundary set for each paper or for the whole subject?

For the whole subject, on the total mark across the papers. Some boards also publish notional figures for individual components, which are useful for diagnosing where marks were lost but are not what determines the grade. The grade comes from the total, and only from the total.
