What Is a Scaled Score?

Why the same number of correct answers can be worth different SAT scores on different dates, what equating is doing, and where else scaled scores appear.

Scaled score

A scaled score is a raw mark converted onto a fixed reporting scale, so that the same score means the same level of attainment whichever version was sat.

This looks like unfairness until you turn it round. Two forms of a test are never precisely equal in difficulty, however carefully they are written. If the reported score were simply the raw count, a student who happened to sit the harder form would be penalised for a fact about the paper rather than about themselves. Equating measures the gap between the forms and absorbs it into the conversion, so the harder form needs slightly fewer correct answers for the same reported score. The raw count describes the paper. The scaled score describes the student.

The problem scaling exists to solve

Any test given on more than one date has to be written more than once, and any two versions will differ slightly in difficulty. That is not a flaw in the test writing; it is unavoidable once questions are new each time. The question is only who absorbs the difference.

A raw score puts it on the student. A scaled score puts it on the conversion. The scale itself is deliberately arbitrary — there is no reason 800 should be the top rather than 100 or 1,000 — and its arbitrariness is part of the point. The number is a position on a fixed ruler, not a count of anything, which is why comparing your scaled score to a friend's is meaningful and comparing your raw counts is not.

How it works on the Digital SAT

The Digital SAT reports two section scores, Reading and Writing and Math, each from 200 to 800, which add to a total from 400 to 1600. Nothing about the reported number tells you how many questions were answered correctly, and the College Board does not publish a single conversion table that holds for every test date, because each form has its own.

The test is also multistage adaptive, which makes scaling structurally unavoidable rather than merely desirable. Each section is delivered in two modules, and the difficulty of the second module depends on how the first went. Two students can therefore sit the same section, see different second modules, answer the same number of questions correctly and have demonstrated different things. Only a conversion that knows which module was delivered can turn those two raw counts into comparable scores.

The practical consequence for anyone doing practice tests is that estimated scores wobble. A practice score is an estimate produced by a conversion built for that practice form, and treating a five-point movement between two practice tests as progress or decline reads more into the number than it can carry.

Where else the same idea turns up

Key Stage 2 tests in England report scaled scores too, on a range from 80 to 120, where 100 is the expected standard. The raw mark required for 100 is decided each year after the tests have been taken, for precisely the same reason the SAT converts: this year's test is not identical in difficulty to last year's, and the standard is supposed to be.

GCSE and IGCSE do the same job by a different route. They report a grade rather than a scaled score, and the adjustment for paper difficulty happens when the grade boundary is set. A scaled score and a grade boundary are two mechanisms answering one question: how do you make a mark on this paper mean the same as a mark on a different one?

Look at the trend across several tests and at which question types you are losing marks on, not at a single number.

Is the SAT curved against the other students sitting that day?

No. Equating compares the difficulty of the form you sat against previously calibrated forms, not your performance against the people in the room with you. Sitting on a date when other candidates happen to do well does not lower your score, and there is no fixed quota of high scores per date.

Can I convert my raw score to an SAT score myself?

Only with the conversion table published for that specific form, and even then a practice-test conversion is an approximation of the real thing. Generic raw-to-scaled tables circulating online are estimates, sometimes badly out of date, and are best treated as a rough indication rather than a result.
