The moderator found this centre marking three marks generously across the sample, so every candidate in it drops three. The student who was top of the class is still top of the class, and the student who was fourth is still fourth. Nobody was judged individually; the school's judgement of who did better than whom was accepted, and only the level it was pitched at was corrected.
What the moderator is actually looking at
A moderator does not re-mark the centre. They read a sample of work, chosen to spread across the marks the school submitted, and ask one question: has this school applied the published mark scheme at the same standard as every other school in the country? The board is checking calibration, not competence, and the sample exists because re-marking every folder from every centre would be impossible.
The school has work to do before that point. Where more than one teacher marks the same component, the centre is required to bring its markers into line with each other first and submit a single set of marks. Moderation is the external check that follows internal standardisation; it is not a substitute for it.
Why the whole class moves together
This is the part parents find hardest to accept, and it follows from what is being checked. The board has no independent view of your child. It has a view of your child's school. If the school's marking sits three marks high, the correction is three marks off everyone, applied as a scaling that preserves the order the school set.
So a moderated mark going down is not a statement that one student's work was overrated. It is a statement that the centre's yardstick was short. If the moderator finds the ordering itself unreliable — the folder the school ranked second is plainly the weakest — that is a different and more serious finding, and it usually means the board looks at more of the centre's work rather than applying a straight adjustment.
Four words that get used interchangeably and should not be
Standardisation is markers being brought to a common standard before marking begins. Marking is what examiners do to exam scripts, externally, for the board. Awarding is the setting of grade boundaries once a whole series has been marked. Moderation is only the check on marks a centre awarded itself.
One consequence matters for anyone reading this because of maths: nothing in GCSE Mathematics is moderated. Edexcel 1MA1, AQA 8300 and OCR J560 are each assessed by three written papers and no internally assessed component, so no teacher mark from your school reaches the certificate. A maths grade that looks wrong is a question about marking or about a review of marking, never about moderation.

Does moderation apply to GCSE Maths?
No. All three English boards assess GCSE Mathematics entirely by written examination, and Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics has no coursework component either. There is nothing for a moderator to sample. If a maths grade looks wrong, the route is a review of marking through the school, which is a different process on a different timetable.
Can moderation lower my child's mark?
Yes, and it can raise it. If the board finds a centre marked generously, marks come down across that centre; if it finds the centre marked severely, they go up. Either way the adjustment applies to the cohort rather than to one candidate, which is why a school will sometimes warn a whole year group that internal marks are provisional.
Is moderation the same as asking for a remark?
No. A review of marking happens after results, is requested for one named candidate, and applies to externally marked exam scripts. Moderation happens before results, is initiated by the board, and applies to a centre's internally assessed marks. You cannot request moderation, and a school cannot request that one pupil be moderated.
Who is the moderator?
An experienced teacher or examiner appointed and trained by the exam board, working to the same published mark scheme the school used. Most moderation is now done from work uploaded by the centre rather than posted, which is why schools ask for photographs, scans or recordings of practical work at a fixed deadline.
