Grade 2 Mathematics Tutoring

The short answer

Grade 2 mathematics extends place value to 999 and makes written methods formal. The year covers addition with carrying, subtraction with borrowing, multiplication as repeated addition with the 2, 5 and 10 tables, division as sharing, halves and quarters, measurement, telling the time, and 2-D and 3-D shapes.

Where students get stuck

  • Subtraction that requires borrowing across a zero, such as 302 − 147.
  • Learning times tables as a memorised chant with no link to repeated addition or arrays, so the facts collapse inside a word problem.

What changes from Grade 1

Hundreds arrive, and with them the column methods. A Grade 1 child works with quantities they can picture; a Grade 2 child works with a written procedure that stands in for the quantity, and the procedure only holds up if the place value underneath it is solid.

Multiplication and division also appear for the first time, as repeated addition and as sharing. Neither is expected to be fast this year, but both need to be understood before they are drilled.

Subtraction across a zero

302 − 147 defeats more Grade 2 students than any other single question. There is nothing in the tens column to borrow from, so the child has to go to the hundreds, exchange twice, and hold the whole thing in their head.

Students who have learned the steps without the meaning tend to invent a digit at this point and move on. We use place value counters until a child can say out loud what the exchange did to the number, because the explanation is what survives when the question changes shape.

Times tables need a picture, not only a chant

Chanting the 5 times table produces a child who can recite it and cannot use it. Asked how many wheels on seven cars, they start at 5, 10, 15 and count up, because the chant is a sequence rather than a set of facts.

Arrays fix this — four rows of five, counted, then rearranged as five rows of four. Once the child can see that both give twenty, the table stops being a song and starts being something they can reach into from any direction.

My child gets questions like 302 − 147 wrong every time. Why?

Borrowing across a zero needs two exchanges rather than one, and a student who learned the method as a sequence of steps has nothing to fall back on when the tens column is empty. It is usually a place value gap rather than a subtraction gap, and it responds to counters rather than to more practice.

Which times tables should a Grade 2 student know?

The 2, 5 and 10 tables, understood as repeated addition rather than recited as a sequence. The test is whether a child can answer 7 × 5 without starting at 5 and counting up.
