Science becomes a set of models

Primary science explained what could be observed. Grade 6 introduces two things nobody can see — cells and particles — and asks students to reason with them anyway, which is a genuinely different intellectual demand.

It also introduces levels of organisation: cells make tissues, tissues make organs, organs make systems. Students who can move up and down that ladder find Grade 8 genetics and Grade 9 biology considerably easier than those who learned the four words in order.

Particles move apart; they do not swell

Told that a metal bar expands when heated, most students conclude the particles got bigger. It is a sensible inference from the observation, and it quietly contradicts everything the particle model is for.

The correction has to be made explicitly, because the model still gives the right answer for a while afterwards. What changes on heating is the spacing and the speed, not the particle, and a student who has the wrong version will get thermal expansion right and thermal conduction wrong in Grade 7.

Elements, compounds and mixtures

Air gets called a compound and so do alloys. Both are mixtures, and the confusion is understandable — the components are evenly spread and cannot be seen separately, which is what a compound looks like from outside.

The distinction is chemical rather than visual. In a compound the elements have reacted and lost their own properties; in a mixture they have not, and can be separated by physical means. Getting this straight in Grade 6 is what makes the periodic table and chemical equations in Grade 8 tractable.

Do particles get bigger when something is heated?

No — they move faster and spread further apart, which is why the object expands. The particles themselves are unchanged. It is one of the most common Grade 6 misconceptions and it is worth correcting directly, because it gives the right answer for expansion and the wrong one for conduction.

Is air a compound?

No, air is a mixture. Its gases are evenly spread but have not reacted together and keep their own properties, which is why they can be separated physically. Water is a compound: hydrogen and oxygen have reacted and the result behaves like neither.
