Grade 10 science is the applied half of the course. Physics moves to heat, waves, optics and electricity, chemistry to gas laws, electrochemistry and organic compounds, and biology to coordination, inheritance and human physiology. Grade 10 is where science becomes applied
Grade 9 built the models: forces, atoms, cells. Grade 10 spends them. Electricity, waves and optics in physics; electrochemistry and organic chemistry in chemistry; coordination, inheritance and human physiology in biology.
The change matters for revision. Grade 9 content can largely be learned; Grade 10 content has to be applied to a situation the student has not seen, which is why reading notes produces so much less improvement than answering questions does.
Some marks are drawn, not written
Ray diagrams and circuit diagrams carry marks for the drawing itself — arrows on the rays, correct component symbols, lines that actually meet. A student who understands refraction perfectly and draws it approximately still loses the marks.
These are among the cheapest marks on the paper to recover, because the fix is mechanical. We practise the standard diagrams until they can be produced quickly and correctly under time, and we mark them the way the board does.
Definitions and units
Every one of the three papers opens with recall marks. Definitions, units and the standard descriptions are the most predictable marks in the examination and the ones most often given away, because they feel too easy to revise.
We test them cold and briefly at the start of sessions. It is unglamorous, it takes five minutes, and it is worth more per minute than almost anything else in the final term.
Revising three sciences at once
The practical problem of Grade 10 is not any single topic. It is that three separate subjects, each with its own paper, are examined within days of each other, and students revise the one they enjoy.
A written plan that allocates time by weakness rather than by preference is the single most useful thing a family can do in the final term. We build one at the start of the year and revise it after each mock, and we would rather a student cut a strong strand than lose a weak one.

What science topics are in the Grade 10 (Matric) syllabus?
Physics covers heat, waves, sound, optics, electricity, electromagnetism and nuclear physics. Chemistry covers gas laws, kinetics, electrochemistry, salts and organic chemistry. Biology covers coordination and control, reproduction and inheritance, biotechnology, and human physiology and disease.
Which Grade 10 science topics cause the most difficulty?
Reliably three: ray diagrams in optics, series and parallel circuits, and monohybrid inheritance. All three fail for the same reason — the student can state the rule and cannot apply it to an unfamiliar diagram — and all three respond to practice with feedback rather than to rereading.
How do we revise physics, chemistry and biology together?
With a written plan that allocates time by weakness rather than by preference, and rotates the three so none is left for the last fortnight. Students left to choose will revise the strand they like, which is the one that needed the time least.
Do you follow the SSC syllabus or IGCSE?
Whichever the student is entered for. The physics, chemistry and biology content overlaps considerably between SSC Part II and Cambridge IGCSE, but the papers, the command words and the mark schemes differ, and we teach and practise against the one that will be sat.
