The year science starts asking why

In Grade 1 a child names the material a bottle is made from. In Grade 2 they are asked why it was made from that material and not another, which is a different kind of answer — a property plus a purpose, in a full sentence.

The same shift runs through habitats. Naming animals in a pond is a Grade 1 task; explaining why those animals live there and not in a desert is the Grade 2 version, and it is where science begins to need the writing skills English is building in parallel.

Where the force idea goes wrong

Most seven-year-olds decide a force is a push. Pulls are accepted once demonstrated, but the durable misconception is that a book lying on a table has no forces on it at all, because nothing is happening.

We do not resolve that fully at Grade 2, and it would be dishonest to claim otherwise — balanced forces are properly a middle-school idea. What this year can do is establish that forces change how things move and also change their shape, which is the foothold the later explanation needs.

Eyes do not adjust to complete darkness

Children know that a dark room gets easier to see in after a few minutes, and generalise it: given long enough, you would see in total darkness. The everyday experience is real, because no ordinary room is ever fully dark.

The correction is worth making carefully rather than flatly. Seeing requires light to reach the eye, so with no light at all there is nothing to adjust to — and the child's original observation was a good one about a room that had a little light in it.

Is electricity safe to teach at seven?

In this form, yes. Grade 2 circuits use a single cell, wires and a lamp — voltages too low to harm anyone — and the safety content is about mains sockets and water, which is exactly the age to cover it.

My child says a book on a table has no forces on it. Is that wrong?

It is wrong, and it is also completely normal at seven. Balanced forces are a middle-school idea; what Grade 2 needs to establish is that forces change how things move and how they are shaped. The full explanation lands better in Grade 4 and beyond.
