Reading a whole book
Extracts and short stories give way to a novel read from start to finish. That is a stamina change as much as a reading one, and students who have only ever met a text in one sitting often find the first three weeks genuinely hard.
It also makes theme possible for the first time. You cannot discuss what a book is about from one page, and Grade 6 is where the question moves from what happened to what the writer was doing across three hundred of them.
Paragraphs with a point
The standard Grade 6 essay is one long block of prose with several ideas inside it, none of them announced. The student knows which idea is which, so the absence of structure is invisible from the inside.
A topic sentence solves it and is teachable in a fortnight. If the first sentence of a paragraph says what the paragraph will argue, everything after it either supports that or belongs somewhere else — a test the student can apply themselves while writing.
Why, not what
Asked why the writer described the room as cold, students retell what happened in it. Plot is what they are confident about, and analysis feels like being asked to guess at something with no right answer.
It has a right shape, though, even where it has no single right answer: what the writer did, what effect it has, and why it suits the moment. Grade 6 is early to expect that fluently, but it is the right year to start, because Grade 7 and 8 assume it.

My child reads well but writes badly. What is going on?
They are usually two separate skills, and Grade 6 exposes the gap. Reading fluently does not teach paragraph structure or how to hold an argument across a page. Topic sentences are the quickest intervention, because they give a student a test they can apply while writing.
How long is a Grade 6 English class?
60 minutes, three to five times a week, in a group of at most five. Small groups matter more in English than in most subjects, because a tutor has to read what each student wrote to see why an answer did not land.
