Will My Child Understand a Pakistani Tutor's English?

The three things that actually decide it, in order

First, the audio chain. A laptop's built-in microphone, in a room with a fan running, compressed for the internet and arriving with a little packet loss, strips out exactly the high frequencies that distinguish one consonant from another. That is where most 'I couldn't understand him' comes from, and a five-pound headset at both ends fixes more of it than anything else on this page.

Second, pace and chunking. An explanation delivered as one ninety-second run is hard to follow in any accent, from anyone, in any country. Short sentences, a pause, and a question back to the student are what make a lesson followable — and they are also, not coincidentally, what makes it teach.

Third, vocabulary. A child does not report unfamiliar words; they just stop following for a moment and then come back a step behind. 'Sum' used to mean any question, DMAS instead of BODMAS, 'cancel' for simplify, lakh for a hundred thousand. None of these are mistakes. All of them cost attention if the tutor has not switched to the child's classroom language.

About the accent itself

It is a fair thing to wonder about and it deserves a straight answer rather than a reassurance. Pakistani English is a settled variety with its own vowel qualities and a rhythm closer to syllable-timed than the stress-timed rhythm of British English, which is why it can sound faster than it is. Consonants are generally crisp. It is not a heavy accent so much as a differently weighted one.

Most British and Gulf-based children have already heard it — in their own classrooms, from doctors, on television — without ever having thought about it. What is genuinely new to a child is the rhythm rather than the sounds, and ears adjust to rhythm quickly. In practice a child notices it for the first ten minutes of the first lesson and stops noticing by the second.

The honest exception is the very young. A six-year-old has a smaller stock of accents to match against and takes longer. That is a reason to give it three sessions, not a reason to avoid it.

How to test it properly in the free demo

The demo exists for this. Most parents use it to see whether the class felt friendly, which tells you almost nothing about comprehension. Five specific things tell you a great deal.

The most important is the first. A child sitting next to a parent will say the class was fine, because that is what children say. A child asked afterwards to explain one thing they learned will show you exactly how much of it landed.

• Sit out of sight rather than beside them, then ask afterwards: explain one thing the tutor taught you.
• Count how often the tutor checks understanding with a real question rather than "OK?" or "Are you with me?"
• Turn the video off for two minutes. If the lesson still works on audio alone, the audio is good enough.
• Watch whether the tutor writes as they speak. Written working carries the meaning when a word is missed.
• Notice whether the tutor's classroom vocabulary matches your child's school — BODMAS or DMAS, simplify or cancel.

What to do if it is not working

Say it, in the class, on the day. 'Could you go a bit slower' is the most effective sentence in online tutoring and the least used, because children will not say it and parents feel rude saying it. A good tutor is grateful for it; a tutor who is not grateful for it has told you something.

Then use the recording. Every class is recorded, and re-watching a difficult explanation at 0.75 speed is a genuine fix rather than a consolation — it removes the pace problem entirely and lets a student sit with the working.
