Two dates, and the gap between them is the whole problem

That gap is not an oversight; it is the design. Cancellation is meant to be used by a student who knows something went wrong in the room — not by a student weighing an actual number. If you are trying to decide whether a score is good enough to keep, you are already outside the case cancellation was built for.

It is permanent, and it is not a refund

College Board is unambiguous: after a request to cancel scores is submitted, scores cannot be reinstated or reported to you or to any institution. There is no appeal and no window in which you can change your mind after release day and ask for the number back.

Cancelling a score is also a different thing from cancelling a registration. The USD 68 you paid to sit the test is gone either way; cancelling the score simply means you paid it for nothing.

Why Score Choice usually makes cancelling the wrong move

Score Choice lets you decide which sittings to send after you have seen them, and it costs nothing. College Board describes it plainly: you choose by test date for the SAT. A weak sitting you keep but never send does exactly what a cancelled sitting does, with the difference that you got to look at it first.

And looking at it first has value beyond admissions. A score you cancelled is a diagnosis you threw away — you no longer know whether the problem was Math, Reading and Writing, or timing, which is precisely the information the next round of preparation needs.

The one genuine exception is an institution that requires every sitting. There, a kept score is a sent score, and cancelling is the only way to remove it. That policy is rarer than students assume and it does change, so confirm it on the university's own testing page before acting on it.

What we tell a student who walks out unhappy

Almost every student leaves the test centre convinced it went badly. The feeling is not evidence. Students routinely score at or above their practice average on a test they described as a disaster, because the questions that felt hardest were the ones the adaptive second module gave them for scoring well in the first.

So the standing advice in our SAT programme is: do not cancel. Wait the 13 days, read the section scores, and decide what to send later. The only time we have supported cancelling is where a student was genuinely unwell during the sitting and an all-scores institution was on the list.
