Are US Universities Still Test-Optional?

Six Ivies, MIT, Caltech and Stanford require the SAT again for 2026–27. Princeton returns in 2027–28. What optional really means for an overseas applicant.

Who requires scores for the 2026–27 cycle

The reversal has been concentrated at the most selective institutions, and it happened university by university rather than as a sector-wide decision. For applicants entering in the 2026–27 cycle, the following require the SAT or ACT.

Requiring a score is not the same as reading it the same way. Caltech, for instance, requires a test but never considers a composite, reviewing individual subscores instead. So "required" is the start of the question about a university's policy rather than the end of it.

Where optional still means optional

A large part of the American system remains test-optional, including Columbia and a long list of well-regarded private and public universities. For those, an applicant genuinely may apply without a score and be read on the rest of the file.

The University of California is a separate category again. UC does not consider SAT or ACT scores in admissions decisions or for most scholarships — submitting them changes nothing, and scores may only be used later for course placement. That is test-blind, and it is the only policy under which sitting the SAT is truly irrelevant to the outcome.

Why optional works differently from Lahore

A test-optional policy asks an admissions officer to judge an applicant on grades, curriculum rigour, essays and references. For a student at a US high school the office already knows, that works. For a student at a school in Lahore, Dubai or Karachi that has sent no applicants to that university before, several of those inputs carry much less information: a transcript from an unfamiliar system, a grading scale nobody in the room can calibrate.

A score is the one number that is directly comparable to every other applicant. That is why we advise international applicants to treat test-optional as test-recommended unless the score would sit clearly below the university's published middle range. Applying without a score from an unknown school removes the easiest evidence you have.

How to build a list when the rules keep moving

Check each university's own testing page, in the spring before applying, and check it again in the autumn. Policies have been announced with a few months' notice — Princeton's return was announced in October 2025 for a cycle two years out, but others have moved faster than that. Third-party lists go stale quickly and this is not a subject to take from a blog.

Then build the calendar backwards from the earliest deadline on the list. If any university requires a score, the score has to exist by then, which usually means sitting in August, October or November rather than hoping for December.

Should I submit my SAT score if the university is test-optional?

Compare it to the university's published middle 50% range for admitted students. At or above the midpoint, submit. Clearly below the bottom quartile, do not. In between, and applying from a school the university does not know, we lean towards submitting — the score is comparable in a way that the transcript is not.

Is test-optional the same as test-blind?

No. Test-optional means the university will read a score if you send one. Test-blind means it will not consider a score at all, even if you send it — the University of California's policy. Under a test-blind policy, sitting the SAT has no effect on admission and no effect on most scholarships.

Which Ivy League universities do not require the SAT?

Princeton and Columbia, as of the 2026–27 cycle. Princeton's exemption is temporary: it is test-optional for applicants seeking to enrol in fall 2026 and fall 2027, and returns to requiring scores from the 2027–28 admission cycle onward, with an exemption for active military personnel. Do scholarships still require test scores?

Often, yes — merit scholarship programmes frequently keep a testing requirement or a score threshold even at universities where admission itself is test-optional. If funding is part of the plan, read the scholarship page separately from the admissions page, because they are written by different offices.
