Digital SAT vs Paper SAT: What Changed
The digital SAT runs 2h14 with 98 questions, adapts between modules and allows a calculator throughout Math. What changed from the paper test, and why it matters.
The short answer
The digital SAT replaced the paper test. It runs 2 hours 14 minutes instead of about three, adapts between modules rather than presenting a fixed form, and allows a calculator throughout Math. Paper administration survives only as an approved accommodation, so this comparison mainly helps you judge old practice material.

Why the comparison still matters
The paper SAT is no longer a choice a student makes, so this is not really a decision page. It matters for one practical reason: a large amount of preparation material still in circulation was written for the paper test, and a student working through it is practising the wrong exam.
The clearest tell is a non-calculator mathematics section. If a practice set has one, it was built for the paper test — the digital SAT permits a calculator throughout Math.

The adaptive stage is the real change
The digital test adapts between modules rather than question by question. Performance on the first module of a section determines the average difficulty of the second module in that section, and both modules contribute to the section score.
This changes pacing advice completely. On a fixed paper form, time spent early was time not spent later and nothing more. On the digital test, the first module decides which score band is reachable at all, so there is no benefit in rushing it and a considerable cost.
Short texts instead of long passages
The paper test attached several questions to each long passage, which rewarded a particular skill: reading one text carefully enough to answer five different things about it. The digital test asks one question per text, with stimuli running 25 to 150 words.
That is a different reading task, and it rewards different practice. Students who trained on the old format often find themselves over-reading short digital stimuli, spending ninety seconds on a passage that carries a single question.
What we practise instead
Our SAT preparation runs 90-minute sessions timed against the real module structure — 32 minutes, 32 minutes, 35 minutes, 35 minutes — rather than against generic problem sets. Students who have only practised untimed do not discover a pacing problem until it costs them a module.
We also spend deliberate time on the Desmos tool built into Bluebook. Students who arrive fluent with it convert several Math questions from an algebra problem into a graph read, which is time bought back for the questions that need it.

Common questions
Can a student still take the SAT on paper?
Not as a general administration. The test is delivered digitally through Bluebook, and paper forms remain available only for students approved to test on paper.
Are old SAT practice papers still useful?
Partly, for content. They are misleading for format: they contain a non-calculator mathematics section that no longer exists, long passages with multiple questions attached, and a fixed structure with no adaptive module. Use them for topic practice, not for timing or strategy.
How much shorter is the digital SAT?
It runs 2 hours 14 minutes of testing against roughly three hours on paper, and College Board notes that the digital test allows more time on average per question despite the shorter total.
Does the digital test adapt question by question?
No. It is multistage adaptive, which means it adapts between modules. Performance on the first module of a section sets the average difficulty of the second module in that same section.
