How the Digital SAT Adapts, and What to Do About It
Your accuracy in module 1 decides how hard module 2 is. That one fact changes how you pace the test, when you guess, and where your preparation time should go.

How the Digital SAT is actually built
The Digital SAT is two sections taken in a fixed order, Reading and Writing first and then Math, and each section is split into two modules. You sit it on Bluebook, the College Board's own application, on a laptop or tablet rather than on paper. Total testing time is two hours and fourteen minutes with a break between the sections. That is roughly an hour shorter than the old paper SAT, and there is no essay.
Reading and Writing runs as two modules of 32 minutes, 27 questions each. Math runs as two modules of 35 minutes, 22 questions each. A countdown clock sits on screen and can be hidden if it makes you anxious, though most students do better leaving it visible. Scores still run from 400 to 1600 across the two sections.
Inside a module you have full freedom: you can skip, flag a question, and come back to it before time runs out. Across modules you have none. When module 1 closes those questions are gone, even though you are still in the same section. Desmos is built in for the whole Math section, a formula reference sheet is provided, and Reading and Writing has an on-screen annotation tool.

What multistage adaptive really means
The test adapts between modules, not between questions. Everything you do in module 1 is scored together, and that total decides which of two versions of module 2 you receive, a harder one or an easier one. Nothing you answer inside module 1 changes the question in front of you next. The routing happens once, at the join, and it is the most consequential moment in the test.
This is why module 1 accuracy is worth more than module 2 speed. The scoring model accounts for how difficult each question was, so correct answers in the harder second module carry more weight, and the top of the score range is only reachable through the harder pathway. No conversion table for any of this has been published. If someone shows you one, they made it up.
So do not pace yourself through module 1 intending to work hard later. Spend your careful re-reading there. Every question in module 1 counts the same toward the routing, so there is no advantage in hunting for the hard ones. You will not be told which version of module 2 you received, and guessing mid-test misleads people constantly: a comfortable second module often means the easier route, and a brutal one is good news.
There is no penalty for a wrong answer
Nothing should ever be left blank. The Digital SAT is rights-only scored, meaning you gain credit for correct answers and lose nothing for incorrect ones. A blank and a wrong answer are worth exactly the same, so a guess is free. This holds for the multiple-choice questions and for the type-in Math questions equally.
Almost nobody leaves a blank on purpose. They leave it because the module ended while they were still deciding. Build a habit that removes the possibility: when about two minutes remain, stop solving and fill every empty answer, then return to whatever you were working on. Two minutes is enough to put something in every gap, and it converts a certain zero into a real chance.
Guess by elimination rather than instinct wherever you can. In Reading and Writing, most wrong options are statements that are true about the passage but do not answer the question asked, so re-read the stem before choosing between two survivors. In Math, a sense-check of size and sign often removes two options before you have done any real work.

How to build a per-question time budget
Divide the module time by the number of questions in it, then treat the result as an average rather than a target. Reading and Writing gives 32 minutes for 27 questions, which is about 71 seconds each. Math gives 35 minutes for 22 questions, which is about 95 seconds each. Those two numbers are your whole timing framework.
The average is not a target because question types cost wildly different amounts. A Standard English Conventions question about where a comma belongs should take twenty to thirty seconds. A Craft and Structure question attached to a dense nineteenth-century excerpt can honestly need two minutes. The plan is to bank time on the cheap questions so it is there for the expensive ones, which only works if you recognise the cheap ones on sight.
Then set a hard cap and obey it. If you have not made real progress on a Math question after roughly 90 seconds, choose the most plausible option, flag it, and move on. Students lose more marks to one stubborn question than to any gap in content knowledge. Give yourself a single checkpoint too: halfway through the time you should be near halfway through the questions.
Using the built-in Desmos without losing time
Desmos is available for the entire Math section, and it is worth learning properly before test day. It earns its keep where a picture is the answer: finding where two lines or curves intersect, reading the zeros of a quadratic, comparing the behaviour of two functions, or checking a system of inequalities. In those cases typing the equations in is faster than solving them by hand.
It costs more than it saves everywhere else. One-step substitution, arithmetic you can do in your head, geometry questions that arrive with a diagram, and anything where translating the words into an expression is the hard part are all slower through the calculator. Every keystroke is time, and reaching for it on easy questions is where capable students quietly lose their margin.
Learn the tool inside Bluebook rather than on a website, so the typing behaviour is familiar. You should be able to graph a function, add a horizontal line at y equals a constant, use a slider for an unknown coefficient, and read an intersection point without thinking. If you cannot do those four things quickly, practise them before spending another hour on content revision.

What Reading and Writing actually tests
Reading and Writing tests four domains, and the passages are short. Each question comes with its own passage, usually a single paragraph, and each passage carries exactly one question. There are no long passage sets to work through as there were on paper. The four domains are Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions, and Expression of Ideas.
Questions are grouped by domain and run roughly from easier to harder within each group, so the difficulty climbs and then resets. That is useful to know in the room. A question that feels hard near the end of a group is meant to feel hard, and the next group is likely to start gently again.
Standard English Conventions is the most learnable part of the exam and the fastest place to gain marks, because it rests on a finite list of rules: joining and separating independent clauses, subject-verb agreement, pronoun clarity, modifier placement, verb tense, and the handful of punctuation marks that matter. What the Math section actually covers
Math covers four domains: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. Algebra and Advanced Math together account for the bulk of the section, so that is where preparation time should go if you have to choose. Geometry and Trigonometry is the smallest of the four, though not small enough to skip.
About a quarter of Math questions are student-produced response, meaning you type the answer instead of selecting it. There are no options to eliminate, so the guessing tactics above do not apply, and the entry format itself catches people out. Check before test day how to enter a fraction, a decimal and a negative value. There is still no penalty, so type your best answer rather than leaving the box empty.
A reference sheet of formulas is provided, and you should still memorise the ones you use constantly. Opening the sheet costs perhaps fifteen seconds, which is a sixth of your budget for a Math question. Treat it as a safety net for rare formulas, not a replacement for knowing the area of a circle.
Full-length practice tests and the error log
Sit at least four full-length timed practice tests in Bluebook, spread across your preparation rather than stacked at the end. Use the official ones first, because they are the only material with the real adaptive routing, the real interface and the real Desmos. One test early tells you where you stand, two in the middle show whether anything is changing, and one near the end confirms your pacing.
Reviewing a test should take longer than sitting it. For every question you got wrong, record the domain, the question type, and the reason it was wrong, and there are only four reasons. The reason determines the fix, and three of the four are not solved by more revision. Keep this as a running error log sorted by question type rather than by test date.
After three tests the pattern is usually embarrassingly clear. A student convinced they are weak at Advanced Math finds that eleven of their fourteen lost marks were misreadings and timing, not content. FAQ
Can I go back to module 1 questions after module 2 starts?
No. Flagging and returning works only inside the module you are currently sitting. Once module 1 ends, those questions are closed, even though you are still in the same section. This is why the two-minute sweep matters: anything left blank when a module closes stays blank, and it is scored as wrong.
If I get the easier second module, is my score capped?
Effectively yes. Because the scoring model weights question difficulty, the top of the score range is only reachable through the harder second module. No official conversion table has been published, so treat any specific cap number you see online as invented. The practical point stands: accuracy in module 1 is where the score is decided.
Do I still need to bring my own calculator?
Not necessarily. Desmos is built into Bluebook and available for the whole Math section, so a personal calculator is optional rather than required. Many students bring an approved one anyway for quick arithmetic and as a backup. If you do, use the one you already know; test day is not the moment to learn a new keypad.
How long before the test should I start preparing?
Three to four months of steady weekly work suits most students better than an intensive final month. That is long enough to fix content gaps, sit four practice tests with real gaps between them, and act on an error log. A shorter run can still lift a score, but it usually improves pacing and guessing rather than underlying maths.
