Quotient: the Word for the Answer to a Division
Dividend, divisor, quotient and remainder labelled on 47 ÷ 5 in one line, plus why 'the quotient of 12 and 4' means 12 ÷ 4 and never the other way round.
Quotient
The quotient is the result of a division — the number of times the divisor goes into the dividend.

الإجابة باختصار
The quotient is the answer to a division. In 47 ÷ 5, 47 is the dividend, 5 is the divisor, 9 is the quotient and 2 is the remainder. Where the division is written as a decimal, 47 ÷ 5 = 9.4, and 9.4 is the quotient.
مثال
47 ÷ 5 = 9 remainder 2 dividend 47, divisor 5, quotient 9, remainder 2
The dividend is the amount being shared, the divisor is what you are sharing it into, and the quotient is how many each part gets. Here 5 goes into 47 nine times with 2 left over, so the quotient is 9 and the remainder is 2 — and 5 × 9 + 2 = 47 checks all four numbers at once.
Four names in one division
Every division has the same anatomy, and the names are worth learning because questions use them instead of the numbers. In a ÷ b, a is the dividend, b is the divisor, and the answer is the quotient. Anything left over is the remainder.
The same words apply to a fraction: in 47/5 the numerator 47 is the dividend and the denominator 5 is the divisor. This is why a fraction is sometimes described as an unresolved division — the fraction bar and the division sign are doing the same job.
- Dividend — the number being divided (47)
- Divisor — the number you divide by (5)
- Quotient — the result of the division (9, or 9.4)
- Remainder — what is left when the division is not exact (2)
Whether the quotient is 9 or 9.4
Both are used, and the difference is not a disagreement so much as two contexts. In primary work, where divisions are written as '9 remainder 2', the quotient means the whole-number part — 9 — and the remainder is quoted separately.
In algebra, and in SAT questions, quotient means the result of the division however it comes out: 47 ÷ 5 = 9.4, and the quotient is 9.4. If a question mentions a remainder alongside it, you are in the first sense. If it does not, take the quotient to be the full answer.
How the word appears in questions
The four operations each have a noun for their result, and the order matters for two of them. 'The sum of 12 and 4' is 16 and 'the product of 12 and 4' is 48, and swapping the numbers changes nothing. 'The quotient of 12 and 4' is 12 ÷ 4 = 3, and reversing it gives 1/3 instead.
The word also shows up in algebra, where 'the quotient of x² + 3x + 2 and x + 1' means the result of dividing one by the other, and in formulae written as fractions — speed is the quotient of distance and time.
- Sum — the result of adding
- Difference — the result of subtracting
- Product — the result of multiplying
- Quotient — the result of dividing
أسئلة شائعة
What is the quotient of 12 and 4?
3, because the phrase means 12 ÷ 4. The first number named is the dividend and the second is the divisor, so the order cannot be swapped — 'the quotient of 4 and 12' would be 4 ÷ 12, which is 1/3. Sums and products tolerate reversal; quotients and differences do not.
Is the quotient always a whole number?
No. 47 ÷ 5 = 9.4, and 9.4 is a perfectly good quotient. It is only whole when the divisor divides the dividend exactly, or when a question has deliberately restricted you to whole-number answers with a remainder quoted alongside, as primary short-division questions usually do.
Does the quotient include the remainder?
No — they are named separately for that reason. In 47 ÷ 5 = 9 remainder 2, the quotient is 9 and the remainder is 2. If you want a single number that carries both, write the answer as a decimal, 9.4, or as a mixed number, 9 2/5.
What is the difference between a quotient and a product?
A product is what multiplication gives you and a quotient is what division gives you. They are opposites in the same way the operations are: the product of 9 and 5 is 45, and the quotient of 45 and 5 takes you back to 9. Confusing the two nouns reverses the operation entirely.
