Do Pakistani Tutors Know the British Curriculum?

Why the British curriculum is already in the building

Cambridge O Level and IGCSE are not a specialism in Pakistan. They are the ordinary route through urban private schooling, taught in thousands of classrooms and examined every series through the British Council. A Pakistani maths graduate from a private school did not learn the British system later as a professional exercise; they sat it themselves at sixteen and were taught by people who had done the same.

That is why the honest answer to this question is not a defensive one. The knowledge is genuinely there, and it is first-hand. The question is which part of the British system it covers, because 'the British curriculum' is not one document.

Where "the British curriculum" stops being one thing

An English GCSE and a Cambridge IGCSE are separate qualifications from separate awarding bodies, examined differently, graded differently and entered differently. Someone who has taught one has a large head start on the other and has not taught it.

These are the differences that show up in a lesson rather than on paper:

• Grading — England reports 9 to 1; Cambridge 0580 reports A* to G, while 0980 reports 9 to 1. A tutor talking about "getting an A" on 1MA1 has not taught 1MA1.
• Routes — GCSE has Foundation (grades 1 to 5) and Higher (4 to 9); 0580 has Core (C to G) and Extended (A* to E). Different ceilings, decided at entry.
• Papers — Edexcel 1MA1 and AQA 8300 are each three papers of an hour and a half, one non-calculator and two with a calculator. Cambridge 0580 is two papers per candidate.
• Formulae — formulae sheets are provided for GCSE mathematics in England for the 2025 to 2027 examinations, and what is printed on them differs between boards. Drilling the wrong list wastes a student's memory.
• Content emphasis — set notation and Venn diagrams carry more weight in 0580, while iteration and algebraic proof sit in the English Higher tier. Neither syllabus is a subset of the other.

Five questions that settle it before the demo ends

You do not need to audit anyone's CV. You need five minutes of specifics, and a tutor who has taught the specification will answer all of these without pausing.

The fourth one is the strongest. Mark schemes are written by the awarding body and are unmistakably board-specific: the wording of method marks, the way follow-through works, the shape of an 'accept' line. Somebody who has spent time inside Edexcel mark schemes reads one differently from somebody meeting it for the first time, and you can hear which it is.

• Which board and specification code has my child been entered for, and have you taught it?
• Which paper is the non-calculator one, and how do you prepare for it differently?
• Which tier or route are you assuming, and what is the highest grade available on it?
• Take a question from a recent past paper on this specification and talk me through the mark scheme.
• What does a grade 5 mean here, and where is my child at the moment?

The vocabulary tell

The difference a child actually notices is not the specification. It is the classroom language. Pakistani and British mathematics teaching use small, different vocabularies, and none of the differences are errors — they are just unfamiliar, and an unfamiliar word costs a child thirty seconds of attention every time it arrives.

The common ones: 'sum' used to mean any question rather than an addition; DMAS instead of BIDMAS or BODMAS for the order of operations; 'cancel' where an English classroom says simplify; lakh and crore for large numbers; a different layout for long division; 'trigonometrical ratios' where a British paper says trigonometry.

A tutor teaching a British-curriculum child should be using British classroom language, and this is the easiest thing on the whole page to check, because you can hear it in ten minutes of a demo without knowing any mathematics yourself.

How we handle it, and what we do not claim

We ask for the board and specification code at enrolment rather than the year group, and we teach from that board's past papers and mark schemes rather than from generic worksheets. A student on AQA 8300 should be practising AQA questions, because the phrasing and the mark allocation are part of what is being learned.

What we do not claim: we teach mathematics to GCSE and IGCSE level and Digital SAT, not A Level, and we do not offer GCSE English literature or GCSE history. Those subjects are tied to set texts, specifications and marking cultures that are national in a way that mathematics is not, and a tutor who has not taught them in an English school should not be teaching them to an English candidate. Saying so costs us enrolments and it is the right answer.
