Four thousand and six is not 40006

Numbers spoken aloud do not announce their empty columns. A child hears 'four thousand' and writes 4000, hears 'and six' and writes 6, and ends up with a five-digit number that is ten times too big.

The error is a reliable signal that place value is being treated as spelling rather than as position. A place value chart with the columns drawn in, filled from the left and left visibly empty where nothing was said, sorts it out faster than repeated correction.

The first fraction rule that feels wrong

Every number rule a child has met so far says bigger is bigger. Fractions break it: 1/8 is smaller than 1/4, and the number that looks larger names the smaller piece.

Told as a rule, it gets forgotten by the following week. Shown as a cake cut into four and then into eight, it becomes obvious and stays that way — which matters, because Grade 4 and Grade 5 build directly on this and there is no way round it later.

Division with something left over

Remainders are the year's other genuinely new idea. Up to now division has come out exactly, and a leftover looks like an error rather than an answer.

What a remainder means depends entirely on the question — seventeen children in groups of five is three groups and two children left, but seventeen children needing cars that hold five is four cars. Grade 3 is where students first have to read the situation rather than only the numbers.

My child writes 40006 for four thousand and six. What is going on?

They are writing the number the way it sounds rather than by its columns. Spoken numbers do not mention their empty places, so the zero that holds the hundreds and tens has to be reasoned about. A drawn place value chart fixes it more reliably than correction does.

Why does my child think 1/8 is bigger than 1/4?

Because every number rule so far has said that a bigger digit means a bigger amount, and fractions reverse it. It is the standard Grade 3 misconception. Cutting a real object into four and then eight makes it obvious in a way that being told the rule does not.
