The Semicolon: Two Jobs, and Nothing Else

A semicolon does two jobs: joining two closely related sentences, and separating list items that already contain commas. With the comma splice it repairs.

A semicolon is a punctuation mark that joins two closely related independent clauses, or separates list items that already contain commas.

La respuesta corta

A semicolon has two uses. It joins two statements that could each stand as a sentence but are closely related — it was raining; we stayed indoors. And it separates items in a list when the items already contain commas. Both sides of a semicolon must work as sentences on their own.

Un ejemplo

It was raining, we stayed indoors. → It was raining; we stayed indoors.

The first version is a comma splice: two complete sentences held together by a comma, which is not strong enough to do it. The semicolon is strong enough, and unlike a full stop it keeps the two ideas inside one sentence. Nothing else changes — the whole repair is a single mark.

Use one: joining two sentences that belong together

The rule is exact. Cover the semicolon and read each side alone. If both sides work as complete sentences, the semicolon is correct. If either side cannot stand alone, it is wrong and you need a comma or a colon instead.

The train was late; the connection was missed passes the test. The train was late; because of the snow fails it, because the second half is a subordinate clause and cannot be a sentence.

You never have to use one. A full stop would work in every case. What the semicolon adds is a claim that the two statements belong to each other more closely than two separate sentences would suggest, and that claim is the only reason to reach for it.

Use two: lists whose items already contain commas

When the items in a list have commas inside them, adding more commas between the items produces a sentence nobody can parse. Semicolons take over as the separator and the internal commas keep their normal job.

The tour visits Lahore, Punjab; Karachi, Sindh; and Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Written with commas throughout, that reads as six places rather than three.

This use appears far more in reports, references and formal writing than in stories, which is why students usually meet the joining use first and assume it is the only one.

The comma splice, and four ways out

A comma splice is two complete sentences joined by nothing but a comma. It is among the most commonly marked errors in secondary writing, partly because it sounds right when read aloud: the pause falls in the right place, and only the punctuation is too weak for it.

It was raining, we stayed indoors can be repaired four ways, and they are not equivalent.

  • Full stop — It was raining. We stayed indoors. Two separate facts.
  • Semicolon — It was raining; we stayed indoors. The same two facts, presented as belonging together.
  • Comma plus a conjunction — It was raining, so we stayed indoors. Now the link is named as cause.
  • Subordination — Because it was raining, we stayed indoors. Same cause, with the reason demoted to background.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is the difference between a semicolon and a colon?

A semicolon balances two statements of equal weight. A colon points forward: what follows explains, expands or lists what came before. She had one rule; she never broke it balances. She had one rule: never be late announces and then delivers. Only the semicolon requires a full sentence on both sides.

Can you use a semicolon before however?

Yes, and it is usually the right mark. However, therefore, nevertheless and moreover are adverbs rather than conjunctions, so a comma in front of them creates a splice. The train was late; however, we made the connection. Semicolon before, comma after — that pattern covers most cases.

Do I have to use semicolons in a GCSE exam?

You do not have to, but one used correctly is evidence of exactly the punctuation range mark schemes credit. One or two placed properly are worth more than a page sprinkled with them, and using one wrongly costs more than not using one at all. Check that both halves stand alone.

Is it semicolon or semi-colon?

Both are correct. The national curriculum for England writes semi-colon with a hyphen; most dictionaries and style guides now write semicolon as one word. Neither spelling will be marked wrong in a British school, and the mark itself behaves identically whichever way you write its name.
