What Is a Linear Qualification?

All the exams at the end, nothing banked along the way. What linear assessment replaced, what it does to a two-year plan, and what a resit means without units.

Linear qualification

A linear qualification is assessed entirely at the end of the course in one exam series, rather than in units taken and banked while the course is still running.

La respuesta corta

A linear qualification is one where all the assessment happens at the end of the course, in a single exam series, with nothing banked along the way. GCSEs and A levels in England are linear: the papers sat in one summer produce the entire grade.

Un ejemplo

Linear: three maths papers, one summer, one grade. Modular: unit exams spread across two years, each banked, each resittable.

Under a modular system a student could sit a unit early in the course, receive the result, keep it if it was good and resit it if it was not, and arrive at the end with part of the grade already secured. None of that exists in a linear system. All the papers are sat within a few weeks of each other, marked together, and totalled. Material taught in the first term of a two-year course is examined at the same moment as material taught in the last.

What the reform actually changed

GCSEs and A levels in England were rebuilt as linear qualifications during the 2010s, with the new GCSEs in Mathematics and English first taught from 2015 and first awarded in 2017. Alongside the move to terminal assessment, the January exam series was withdrawn, AS levels were separated from A levels so that AS results no longer counted towards the full award, and coursework was reduced or removed in many subjects.

GCSE Mathematics went to the far end of that: it carries no coursework or controlled assessment at all, and the grade comes entirely from written papers sat in one series. The change applied to qualifications regulated in England; Wales and Northern Ireland took their own decisions, so a maths GCSE sat under a different regulator may be structured differently.

Cambridge International IGCSEs work on the same terminal principle — a candidate sits the complete set of papers for the syllabus in one series — with June and November series available, and a March series in some countries. The route to a grade is the same; only the calendar differs.

What it does to a two-year plan

The real consequence of linear assessment is not that the questions are harder. It is that everything has to be held at once. Two years of content arrives in one exam room, so material learned early has to survive being unused for a very long time, and the only thing that keeps it alive is meeting it again rather than being taught it again.

It also changes what mocks are for. In a modular system there was real, banked evidence part-way through. In a linear one, mocks are the only substantial information anybody has before the exams themselves — which is why they carry weight far beyond their status as internal tests, including in decisions about tier entry.

What a resit means when there are no units

You cannot resit one paper. Because the grade comes from the total across the whole qualification, sitting it again means entering for the qualification again and taking every paper in a later series. There is no mechanism for keeping the good paper and replacing the weak one.

In England, GCSE Mathematics and English Language have an autumn resit series in November for students who need to carry on studying them after sixteen; other subjects and other systems generally wait for the next main series. Whichever route is taken, the new sitting produces a fresh grade for that series, and both results remain on the record.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is the difference between linear and modular assessment?

In a modular course the qualification is split into units, each examined and banked while the course runs, with resits available on individual units. In a linear course there are no units: every paper is sat at the end, in one series, and the grade comes from the combined total. Nothing is secured in advance.

Can I resit just one GCSE Maths paper?

No. The grade is calculated from the total across all three papers, so there is no single paper to replace. Re-entering means sitting the whole qualification again in a later series. This is worth knowing before the exams rather than afterwards, because it makes each paper matter as part of a total rather than on its own.

When are GCSE exams sat?

The main series runs in May and June, with results in August. In England there is also an autumn series in November for GCSE Mathematics and English Language, intended for students continuing with those subjects after sixteen. Cambridge International runs June and November series, with a March series in some countries.

Does coursework count towards GCSE Maths?

No. GCSE Mathematics in England is assessed entirely by written papers, with no coursework or controlled assessment component on any of the main specifications. Every mark that contributes to the grade is earned in the exam room during the assessment series.

Does being linear make a qualification harder?

It makes it a different demand rather than a harder one question by question. More content has to be held at once, and there is no opportunity to bank a good result early and stop worrying about it. Students who revise steadily across two years are affected far less by this than students who revise in bursts.
