Grade 5 Mathematics Tutoring

Live online Grade 5 maths in groups of four: numbers to a million, HCF and LCM, fraction operations, percentages, the unitary method, speed, area and averages.

الإجابة باختصار

Grade 5 is the last primary year and the one middle school assumes. It covers numbers to one million, HCF and LCM, all four operations with fractions, decimals and percentages, the unitary method, distance, time and speed, angles and quadrilaterals, perimeter and area, and averages.

  • Work confidently with numbers up to one million, and use HCF and LCM to simplify problems.
  • Convert between fractions, decimals and percentages, and calculate a percentage of a quantity.

أين يتعثّر الطلاب

  • Dividing by a fraction and expecting the answer to get smaller.
  • Finding a percentage of an amount when the percentage is not a friendly 10%, 25% or 50%.

Dividing can make the answer bigger

Five years of arithmetic have taught that dividing makes things smaller. Then 6 ÷ 1/2 comes out as 12 and the rule breaks, so students assume they have made a mistake and quietly stop trusting the topic.

Asked instead how many half-chapattis are in six chapattis, the same student answers twelve without hesitation. The language of the question is doing the work — division as 'how many of these fit into that' survives fractions, and division as 'sharing out' does not.

Percentages that are not 10, 25 or 50

Most Grade 5 students can find half or a tenth of an amount. Ask for 35% and the method they were using — recognising a familiar fraction — has nothing to offer, and they guess.

Building from 10% and 5% covers most of what the curriculum asks and works under pressure. It also connects directly to the unitary method, which is the same idea and the one Grade 7 proportion, profit and loss questions are built from.

What Grade 6 will assume

Middle school algebra does not pause to check arithmetic. A student who is still slow with fractions will find that every algebraic fraction in Grade 7 costs them twice what it should, and the cause will be invisible in the marks because the topic on the page says algebra.

This makes Grade 5 the cheapest year to repair anything. The gaps are still small, there is no examination pressure, and the arithmetic fixed here is what six more years of mathematics will lean on.

أسئلة شائعة

What maths should a Grade 5 student know before secondary school?

Numbers to one million, HCF and LCM, all four operations with fractions, conversion between fractions, decimals and percentages, the unitary method, distance, time and speed, classification of triangles and quadrilaterals, perimeter and area, and averages.

Why does dividing by a fraction make the answer bigger?

Because division asks how many of one thing fit into another. Six divided by a half is asking how many halves fit into six, and the answer is twelve. The rule that dividing makes things smaller only holds when you are dividing by a number greater than one.

How do I help with percentages at home?

Teach 10% by dividing by ten, then 5% as half of that, then build anything else from those two. 35% is three tens and a five. It is quicker under pressure than the formula and it connects straight to the unitary method used in Grade 7.
