What the year actually covers
The number range is small and every idea is concrete: counting to 99, adding and subtracting within 20, naming flat shapes, telling the hour, and handling coins and notes. Pakistan's Single National Curriculum, Cambridge Primary and the English curriculum agree almost completely at this stage.
What differs between schools is sequence rather than content. A child who changes school mid-year usually meets the same topics in a different order, not a different syllabus.
Why teen numbers are the first real obstacle
Thirteen to nineteen are spoken in the opposite order to the way they are written. A child hears 'four-teen', writes the four first, and produces 41. It is a listening problem wearing a mathematics costume, and marking it as carelessness does not fix it.
We build the number before writing it — ten and four, one ten and four ones, then the digits. Once the tens digit is placed first on purpose, the reversal usually stops within a few weeks.
Counting on rather than counting all
Most six-year-olds solve 8 + 5 by starting at one and counting thirteen times. It produces right answers, which is exactly why the habit survives, and it is the single strategy most worth replacing this year.
Starting from the larger number and counting on five is faster and harder to lose track of, and it is the first step towards recalling number bonds instead of rebuilding them each time. A child who leaves Grade 1 still counting from one carries that slowdown into every year after it.

My child writes 41 for fourteen. Is that a warning sign?
No. It is one of the most common Grade 1 errors and it is a language effect, not a mathematical one — teen numbers are said in the reverse of the order they are written. Saying 'ten and four' before writing anything down clears it for most children.
How long is a Grade 1 maths class?
45 minutes, three or four times a week, in a group of at most four. That is close to the limit of sustained attention at six, and a longer session produces a tired child rather than more mathematics.
