The Numerator of a Fraction

The numerator is the top number of a fraction and it counts the parts you have. Change it and you slide along the number line, one eighth at a time.

Numerator

The numerator is the number written on top of a fraction, and it counts how many of the equal parts are being taken.

الإجابة باختصار

The numerator is the top number of a fraction. It counts how many of the equal parts you have, while the denominator underneath names how big each part is. In 3/8 the numerator is 3, meaning three parts, each of which is one eighth.

مثال

3/8 — the 3 is the numerator, the 8 is the denominator

Read it as three eighths and the two roles separate themselves. The 8 has already decided the size of a piece, which is a whole cut into eight. The 3 does the counting, and it is counting eighths rather than counting ones — which is why 3/8 is smaller than 1/2 despite the larger digit on top.

A hook that survives the exam

Denominator begins with d, for down, and it is also the divisor. Numerator is the other one, up on top. It is a slight hook, but it is enough, and it needs to hold because the words themselves are what instructions are written in.

Multiply the numerator by 3 is unfollowable by a student who has to stop and guess which number is meant, and questions on equivalent fractions, on simplifying and on adding are all phrased this way. Getting the two names automatic is not vocabulary for its own sake; it is what makes the instruction readable.

Change the numerator and you move along the line

Draw a line from 0 to 1 and cut it into eighths. The denominator has fixed the size of the step. The numerator says how many steps to take from zero, so raising it walks you steadily to the right without changing anything about the ruler you are using.

The same line shows what an equivalent fraction is doing. 4/8 and 1/2 land on exactly the same point, so they are one number described with two different sizes of step.

  • 1/8 — one step of an eighth from zero
  • 3/8 — three steps, still well short of the halfway mark at 4/8
  • 7/8 — seven steps, one short of the whole
  • 8/8 — eight steps, which lands exactly on 1

The numerator counts, it does not measure

The 3 in 3/8 is not three of anything ordinary. It is three eighths, and its size depends entirely on the number underneath. This is the single idea that explains why comparing 3/8 with 1/2 by looking at the top numbers gives the wrong answer.

Two consequences follow. The numerator may be larger than the denominator, giving a fraction worth more than 1 — that is an improper fraction, and it is a legitimate thing to write. And the numerator may be 0, which makes the whole fraction 0, since zero eighths is nothing at all. It also follows that the numerator on its own tells you nothing about size: 3/8, 3/4 and 3/100 share a numerator of 3 and are three very different quantities.

أسئلة شائعة

Which number is the numerator, the top or the bottom?

The top. In 5/9 the numerator is 5 and the denominator is 9. The reminder that tends to stick is that denominator starts with d and lives down below; whichever hook you use, it needs to be instant, because exam instructions name these numbers rather than pointing at them.

Can the numerator be zero?

Yes, and the result is simply 0. 0/5 means none of the five parts, which is nothing. This is the opposite of the situation underneath the line, where zero is forbidden — so a fraction with 0 on top is fine, and one with 0 on the bottom is not a number at all.

Can the numerator be bigger than the denominator?

Yes. 7/4 means seven quarters, which is more than one whole, and fractions like this are called improper. Nothing is wrong with them, and they are the form you keep when multiplying or dividing. The name is unfortunate rather than a warning.

What happens to the numerator when a fraction is simplified?

It is divided by the same number as the denominator, so 6/8 becomes 3/4. Both numbers change, and the value does not: the pieces have been made larger and correspondingly fewer are needed. Dividing only the top would produce a different number altogether.
