Science is now three subjects
This is the structural change of the year, and families are often surprised by it. At SSC there is no single science paper: physics, chemistry and biology are separate courses with separate examinations, each with its own vocabulary and its own way of asking a question.
The practical consequence is that a student can be genuinely strong at science and still be in trouble, because one of the three has been quietly neglected. We teach the three strands and report on them separately, so a weak strand shows up as a weak strand rather than as an average.
The mole is where chemistry grades separate
Stoichiometry is the first place in chemistry where arithmetic and concept have to work together. A student who can define a mole and cannot convert grams to moles to particles will lose marks steadily for two years, because every calculation question is built on that conversion.
It is not usually a chemistry problem underneath. More often it is proportional reasoning that was never made automatic, and it responds better to fixing the proportion than to more mole questions.
Physics at Grade 9 is a graph and units subject
Kinematics is taught through graphs, and marks are lost on reading them rather than on the physics. A distance–time graph read as a speed–time graph gives an answer that is confidently wrong and looks like carelessness when it is a genuine misconception.
Units are the other quiet drain. Newtons, joules and watts each carry a definition, and an answer with the right number and the wrong unit is not a correct answer on any of the three papers.
Practical work in an online class
We are honest about what an online class can and cannot do here. It cannot put a student in front of a Bunsen burner. It can do the part that most examination marks actually test: method, variables, fair testing, recording, and drawing and labelling the standard apparatus diagrams.
Where a school runs practicals, we work alongside them rather than duplicating them, and we spend the time on the written half that laboratories rarely have time to teach.

What science subjects and topics does a Grade 9 student study?
Three separate subjects. Physics covers measurement, kinematics, dynamics, turning effects, work and energy, and pressure. Chemistry covers atomic structure, bonding, the mole, the periodic table and acids and bases. Biology covers cells, biomolecules, enzymes, bioenergetics, classification and plant transport.
Is science one subject or three at Grade 9?
Three. At SSC, physics, chemistry and biology are separate courses with separate papers, and Grade 9 is where the split becomes formal. Students following GCSE or IGCSE face the same separation, whether entered for three single sciences or a combined award.
My child is strong in biology and weak in physics. Can you teach only one?
Yes. The three strands are timetabled separately, so a family can take physics alone, or take all three with a heavier weighting on the weakest. That is usually a better use of the fee than spreading sessions evenly across strands that do not need it.
Can science really be taught online?
The written and reasoning half of it can, and that is where the marks are. Diagrams, method, variables, calculations and examination technique all work well in a group of five. Hands-on laboratory work does not replicate, and we say so rather than pretending otherwise.
