Follow where the atoms go
The oxygen released comes from splitting water, not from the carbon dioxide — a detail worth holding onto because it is where the equation stops being a formula and starts being a description. The carbon in the glucose comes from carbon dioxide, and the hydrogen comes from water.
Connect the rate to what limits it
Photosynthesis is examined through graphs as often as through equations, and those graphs are about limiting factors. Increasing light intensity raises the rate until something else runs short, at which point the line levels off. Reading which factor is limiting from where a graph flattens is the skill being tested.

The two stages, and why the distinction matters

The light-independent reactions, known as the Calvin cycle, take place in the stroma — the fluid surrounding the thylakoids. Here carbon dioxide is fixed into sugar using the ATP and NADPH made in the first stage. The name is precise: this stage does not need light directly, but it stops without the products of the stage that does.
What limits the rate
Three factors commonly limit the rate of photosynthesis, and at any moment one of them is the constraint. Raising the others changes nothing until the limiting one is raised, which is exactly what the flattening curve on an exam graph is showing.
Temperature behaves differently from the other two and it is worth being clear why. Light and carbon dioxide produce a curve that rises and levels off. Temperature produces a curve that rises, peaks and then falls, because the enzymes controlling the reaction are denatured at high temperatures.

Why it sits at the base of everything else
Photosynthesis is the entry point for almost all the energy in living systems. The glucose a plant builds becomes the energy source for its own respiration and, through food chains, for the organisms that eat it. A question about food webs, biomass or carbon cycling is usually a question about this reaction at one remove.
It also explains the composition of the atmosphere students are asked about in chemistry. The oxygen released here is the same oxygen used in respiration and combustion, which is why the two processes are so often examined as a pair.
