What Is a Percentile Rank?
A score at the 75th percentile means 75% of the comparison group scored that or lower. It is not 75% correct, and the comparison group changes the number.

A percentile rank is the percentage of test takers in a stated comparison group who scored at or below a given score.

A percentile rank is the percentage of a comparison group who scored at or below a given score. Being at the 75th percentile means 75% of that group scored the same as you or lower. It is not a percentage of questions answered correctly, and changing the comparison group changes the percentile.

Class of 20. Your mark: 62. Students at or below 62: 15. Percentile rank = 15 ÷ 20 = 75th.
Your mark is 62. That number describes your paper. The 75th percentile describes the other nineteen people in the room and says nothing about the paper at all. Put the same 62 in front of a stronger class and your mark does not move a single point while your percentile falls — which is the whole reason the two numbers must never be read as the same thing.
The confusion that costs students most
A percentage score answers "how much of this did I get right?" A percentile rank answers "how many people did I finish level with or ahead of?" They are different questions with different answers, and they collide because both are written with a number out of a hundred. A student at the 40th percentile who has scored 82% has done well on the paper and has been beaten by three fifths of the group.
The convention on most published tables, the SAT's included, is at or below rather than strictly below. That detail sounds pedantic until you are the highest scorer, at which point everyone who scored at or below you includes you — which is one reason score reports print 99+ at the top rather than 100.
Percentile against whom?
A percentile is meaningless without naming the group, which is why SAT score reports carry two of them. The Nationally Representative Sample percentile compares you with all US students in your year group, whether or not they would ever sit the SAT. The SAT User percentile compares you with students who actually took it.
The second number is the smaller one and the more useful one, because the people you are competing with for a university place are test takers, not the general population. When a coaching centre or an advertisement quotes a percentile without saying which comparison group produced it, assume the flattering one has been chosen.
Percentiles are not evenly spaced along the scale
Scores bunch in the middle. That means a handful of extra marks near the centre of the distribution can move you several percentile points, while the same gain near the top moves you barely at all — there is hardly anyone left up there to overtake. Two students who each add the same number of marks can see wildly different movement in their percentile.
This matters when a family sets a target. Climbing from the 50th percentile to the 60th is a genuinely smaller job than climbing from the 90th to the 95th, even though one is ten points and the other is five. Setting the goal in scaled-score terms and treating the percentile as a consequence keeps expectations honest.

Is the 75th percentile the same as scoring 75%?
No, and they can be miles apart. The 75th percentile means three quarters of the comparison group scored the same as you or lower. Scoring 75% means you answered three quarters of the paper correctly. On a hard paper, 55% correct might place you at the 90th percentile; on an easy one, 90% correct might place you at the 40th.
Why does my SAT report show two different percentiles?
One compares you with a nationally representative sample of US students in your year, most of whom never sit the SAT; the other compares you with actual SAT takers. The second is lower and is the one that reflects the applicant pool you are in. Both are on the report so you can see the difference rather than be sold one of them.
What does a university's "middle 50%" mean?
It is the 25th to 75th percentile of scores among students the university admitted or enrolled. Half of them landed inside that band, a quarter below it and a quarter above. It describes who got in last year; it is not a cutoff, and a score below the bottom figure does not make an application impossible.
Can a percentile rank be 0 or 100?
In practice, no. Under the at-or-below convention even the lowest scorer counts themselves, so nobody sits at zero, and reports usually show 99+ instead of 100 at the top so that the very highest scores are not all flattened into one number. Treat 1 and 99+ as the practical ends of the scale.
