Yes, but marking and correcting are different acts. Ticking right answers and flagging wrong ones helps a child. Rubbing out a wrong answer and writing in the right one hands the teacher a perfect book and no information. The error is the data, and it has to survive the journey back to school.

The book is a diagnostic instrument, and you can break it
A teacher going through thirty books is not reading them for correctness. They are looking for which errors repeat, which children share them, and which misconception is worth ten minutes of Monday's lesson. That is most of what a set of books is for.
A book in which every wrong answer has been silently replaced reads as a child who understands. That child is then taught to the wrong picture — usually by being left alone, which is the most expensive form of being taught wrong.
The child learns something too, and it is not good. If a wrong answer disappears before anyone else sees it, the lesson is that being wrong is a thing to hide. That belief costs far more over ten years than any single homework.
Mark, do not correct: what it looks like on the page
The whole procedure takes less of your evening than correcting does, which is the second argument for it after the first one.
- Tick what is right. Ticks are enough; a child reads them faster than comments.
- Put a dot in the margin beside anything wrong. Do not say what is wrong or which line it is on.
- Hand it back and let the child re-attempt underneath, in a different colour or on the next line.
- If it is still wrong after one re-attempt, write 'stuck' and stop. Nobody is teaching algebra at 21:00.
- Leave the original attempt on the page. The teacher needs to see the error, the re-attempt and the point where it broke.
You do not need to be able to do the maths
Everything above works with an answer key and no mathematical knowledge whatsoever. Ticking, dotting and writing 'stuck' require only the answers, and they are the whole of the useful contribution.
Where the school has not supplied answers, ask for them. Most maths departments will, and where they will not, the honest move is to leave the book unmarked rather than guess — a parent's guess entered as a correction is the version that does real damage.
The one thing to interrupt immediately
A wrong method being practised. The signs are recognisable without knowing the subject: the same wrong step in every question, working that is internally consistent and arrives somewhere wrong every time, or a rule stated with great confidence that is not a rule — 'you add the bottoms', 'two minuses always make a plus', 'you move the decimal point when you multiply'.
Stop the set at question three. Do not make them finish it. Write a note to the teacher saying which rule the child believes they are applying. That sentence is worth more to a teacher than twenty completed questions, because it names the thing that has to be untaught before anything else can happen.
When to leave it alone entirely
There are weeks when the right amount of parental marking is none, and knowing which weeks those are is most of the skill.
- Baseline tests and diagnostics, where the whole point is unaided work.
- Homework the teacher has specifically asked to be done without help.
- Any period when sets or exam tiers are being decided, since a flattering book influences a decision that lasts years.
- Any week where the marking is doing more damage to the household than to the misconceptions.

Will the teacher know I marked it?
Usually yes, and that is fine — most teachers welcome it. What is not welcome is a book made to look like unaided work when it was not, because that is the version that produces wrong decisions about a child.
My child gets upset when I mark it. What do I do?
Mark less and dot rather than cross. A dot in the margin with no comment is a much smaller event than a red cross, and re-attempting under your own dot feels like a puzzle rather than a verdict. If it still turns into a fight, hand the marking back to the school.
Should I mark it in front of them or afterwards?
Afterwards, then hand it back. Marking while a child watches turns into teaching within about ninety seconds, and teaching at homework time is where most household conflict about maths actually lives. Handing back a marked page and leaving the room is a much smaller event for everybody than sitting beside them through it.
What if the homework is wrong because my child never understood the lesson?
Then the homework has done its job. Write exactly that on it — 'did not understand the method, stopped at Q3' — and send it in. A teacher would far rather have that sentence than five completed questions produced by a parent at the kitchen table.
