The most useful thing a family can do is find the sentence in writing. Many universities publish it — Edinburgh, for example, states that it will accept International GCSEs and Level 2 Certificates as equivalent to GCSEs. One line on an official page ends the anxiety and can be quoted back if a question ever arises.
The one case that genuinely causes trouble
It is not rejection. It is silence. A course page says "GCSE Mathematics at grade 5" and says nothing about equivalents, and the applicant has no way to tell whether the omission is deliberate or simply because the page was written for domestic applicants. Nine times out of ten it is the latter.
The way through is to ask, in writing, before applying — and to ask precisely. Name the awarding body, the syllabus code, the grade held and the year. "Does Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, grade A, satisfy the GCSE Mathematics grade 5 requirement for this course?" gets an answer. "Do you accept IGCSE?" often gets a link to a general page that does not address the course.
Letters, numbers, and the form that will not take them
Cambridge runs the same maths syllabus under two codes: 0580 reports A* to G, and 0980 reports 9 to 1. Schools choose. That choice matters more than it should, because online application forms and admissions systems built around the 9 to 1 scale sometimes have no clean way to record an A*.
Nothing about this affects whether the qualification is accepted. It affects data entry and it occasionally affects an automated filter, which is why an applicant holding letter grades should attach the certificate and, where a free-text box exists, state the scale. Check the code on the entry before the exam rather than discovering it on a UCAS form two years later.
Where an IGCSE genuinely will not do
It will not substitute for A levels. An IGCSE is a level 2 qualification and undergraduate entry needs level 3 — A levels, the IB Diploma, a recognised national equivalent or a foundation year. No UK university admits to a degree on IGCSEs alone, and any advice suggesting otherwise is confusing two different tiers of qualification.
It also does not exempt an international applicant from an English language requirement in every case. Some universities accept IGCSE English Language at a stated grade as evidence; others require IELTS or an equivalent test regardless. That is a separate rule from the maths one and needs checking separately.
Both limits catch the same family for the same reason: an IGCSE is treated as a GCSE, so everything a GCSE cannot do, an IGCSE cannot do either. Equivalence is a ceiling as well as a guarantee.
