Is IGCSE Maths Harder Than GCSE Maths?

The comparison people actually mean

Almost everyone asking this is holding up one specific pair: Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 at Extended tier against Edexcel GCSE (9–1) Mathematics 1MA1 at Higher tier. Those are the routes that reach the top grades, and they are the two a family is usually choosing between when a school offers both or a move puts one in reach of the other.

Set side by side, they agree about nine tenths of the time. Quadratics, trigonometry, circle theorems, vectors, histograms, compound interest, similar shapes, probability trees — all of that sits in both. The disagreement is at the edges, and the edges are short enough to write out in full.

Three things IGCSE Extended asks for that GCSE Higher does not

The largest is calculus. 0580 Extended expects a candidate to differentiate functions of the form ax to the power n, use the derivative to find the gradient of a curve at a point, and locate stationary points. Nothing in GCSE Higher touches differentiation — the nearest it comes is estimating a gradient by drawing a tangent by eye.

The other two are smaller, but both appear in questions worth several marks and neither can be improvised on the morning.

• Differentiation of ax to the power n, gradients of curves, and turning points
• Formal set notation — n(A), A′, the universal set, ∪ and ∩ — used alongside Venn diagrams
• The nth term of cubic and exponential sequences, where GCSE Higher stops at quadratic and simple geometric progressions

And three the GCSE Higher tier asks for that IGCSE does not

It runs the other way too, which is the half that gets left out of most comparisons. A student moving from a Cambridge school into an English one in Year 11 arrives with gaps, not a head start, and these are the three that show up in a mock.

None of them is conceptually harder than differentiation. What makes them awkward is that they are self-contained procedures with their own notation, so a student who has never met them cannot reason a way in from the mathematics they already know.

• Iterative methods — using a formula of the form x(n+1) = f(x(n)) to find a root to a stated accuracy
• The equation of a circle centred on the origin, and the tangent to that circle at a given point
• Sampling: inferring a property of a population from a sample, and recognising how a sample can mislead

Where the difficulty is actually felt

Content lists explain less than the shape of the paper. Edexcel sets three papers of 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks — 240 marks and four and a half hours in total, with Paper 1 taken without a calculator. Cambridge Extended sets two papers of 2 hours and 100 marks: 200 marks, four hours, and since the 2025 series one of the two, Paper 2, is a dedicated non-calculator paper.

Two long papers concentrate the risk. A bad morning at Edexcel costs a third of the qualification; a bad morning on Cambridge Paper 4 costs half of it. Cambridge questions also arrive with fewer guiding sub-parts, so a student who cannot see the first step more often has nothing to write at all. That, far more than the syllabus, is what makes people say IGCSE is harder.

Which one a student should sit

For most students the choice is not open — the school has already made the entry. Where it is open, the deciding question is what comes next rather than which is gentler. A student going on to A level Mathematics or Digital SAT work gains something real from having met a derivative at 16.

We teach both and we do not pretend they are interchangeable. A student switching mid-course gets a gap audit before any teaching: the six topics listed above are the whole of the difference, and a term of weekly sessions closes them in either direction.
