   Expect short passages, one question each

   roughly 25–150 words per passage, one question

   This is the biggest change from the paper SAT. There is no long passage to hold in memory across several questions, so the skill shifts towards reading a short text very precisely rather than navigating a long one efficiently.

   Questions are grouped by domain and arranged roughly from easier to harder within each module. Knowing which domain a question belongs to tells you what kind of thinking it wants.

   Because each passage carries only one question, reading the question first turns a general read into a targeted search. It is a bigger saving on this format than it ever was on long-passage tests.

   Answer only from the text

   Every correct answer can be justified by something written in the passage. Options that are true in the world but unsupported by the text are the most common wrong answers, and they are attractive precisely because they are true.

   Treat grammar questions as rule-based

   Standard English Conventions is a finite, learnable list

   The conventions domain tests a limited set of rules — clause joining, agreement, pronoun clarity, modifiers, punctuation. Unlike the reading questions, this is content that can be studied to near-completion, which makes it the fastest place to gain points.

What the digital format changed

The move to short passages with one question each removes the endurance element that dominated the paper test. Nobody has to keep track of a 700-word passage while answering eleven questions about it, and running out of time on a single passage no longer costs several questions at once.

It also raises the value of precise reading. With only one question per text, every word of a short passage is potentially load-bearing, and skimming that would have been safe on a long passage is much riskier here.

Where the fastest gains are

Standard English Conventions rests on a limited list of rules: joining and separating independent clauses, subject-verb agreement, pronoun clarity and agreement, modifier placement, verb tense, and a handful of punctuation marks. It is finite in a way that reading comprehension is not.

That makes it the most efficient place for most students to gain points. A student who genuinely learns why a semicolon works where it does, rather than memorising comma cases, converts a whole question category into reliable marks.

How wrong answers are built

The common patterns are recognisable: an answer that is true but not stated in the passage, one that is stated but does not answer the question asked, one that overstates a claim the passage makes cautiously, and one that reverses a relationship.

Learning to name these while practising is worth more than raw practice volume. A student who can say why a wrong option is wrong is much less likely to be drawn to the same construction next time.

How we prepare students for this section

We start with Standard English Conventions, because it is finite and it produces visible score movement quickly, which sustains the effort needed for the slower reading work.

For reading questions we require students to point to the specific words in the passage that justify their answer, every time. It slows practice down and it eliminates the true-but-unsupported trap, which is where most of the losses in this section come from.
