   Understand the two-module structure

   Both Reading and Writing and Math are delivered as two modules. The first is of mixed difficulty for everyone; the second is selected based on how the first went, which is what makes the test adaptive.

   Because the second module's difficulty gates the achievable score, the first module carries disproportionate weight. Rushing it to save time for later is exactly backwards.

   Students who find the second module difficult often assume they are doing badly. The opposite is usually true — the harder second module is the one given to students who performed well and it carries access to the higher scores.

   There is no deduction for incorrect answers, so a blank is strictly worse than a guess. Eliminating even one option before guessing improves the odds further, and the on-screen tools support that.

   The testing application provides a review flag, an option eliminator, a countdown timer that can be hidden, and Desmos for the maths section. Students who have not practised with these lose time discovering them on test day.

It adapts by module, not by question

This distinction matters for strategy. In a question-level adaptive test, an early wrong answer immediately lowers the difficulty of what follows. Here, the whole of module one is fixed, so a question answered wrong at the start has exactly the same effect as one answered wrong at the end.

That means there is no reason to spend disproportionate time on early questions. Within a module, questions are worth the same, and the sensible approach is to secure everything answerable before returning to the difficult ones.

Pacing within a module

Because you can move freely within a module and flag questions for review, the efficient approach is a first pass answering everything that is quick, flagging anything that is not, then a second pass on the flagged ones with whatever time remains.

This guarantees that no easy question is left unattempted because time ran out on a hard one earlier in the module. It is a small procedural change that reliably protects several points.

Practise in the real environment

The test is taken in College Board's own application, and practising on paper leaves students unfamiliar with the interface at exactly the wrong moment. The official practice tests run in the same application and are the closest available approximation to test day.

Working through at least two full practice tests in the app is worth more than a great deal of untimed question practice elsewhere, because it builds familiarity with the tools and the timer alongside the content.

How we prepare students for the format

We tell students plainly that a hard second module is good news. Without that, a strong performer can spend the second half of a section demoralised by difficulty that is actually evidence they are scoring well.

We also drill the two-pass approach within each module until it is automatic. It requires no additional knowledge and it consistently recovers points that would otherwise be lost to time management alone.
