Finishing, and what finishing means

The national Scheme of Studies states it plainly: Nazra Quran is to be completed from early years through to Grade V. Across the five grades the allocation covers the whole Mushaf — the Qaida in Grade 1, the 30th and 1st Para in Grade 2, Para 2 to 8 in Grade 3, Para 9 to 18 in Grade 4, and Para 19 to 29 here.

Khatm is worth marking, and it is worth being clear about what it is. It means a student has read the Quran through, correctly, from the page. It does not mean the reading is finished, any more than finishing a reading scheme in English means a child has finished reading.

The temptation to race

Eleven Para in a year, with a completion date attached, produces the one predictable failure of Grade 5: pace rises to meet the target and the rules quietly go. Madd shortens first, then ghunnah, then the heavy letters lighten.

It sounds better and it is less correct than it was a year ago, which is why it goes unnoticed at home. A session at this age spends as much time slowing a student down as moving them on, and we would rather report a completion a term late than a completion that undid Grade 4.

Tarteel, and reciting in front of people

Tarteel — a measured, composed pace — is what the year is really training, and it cannot be practised alone. The curriculum asks for recitation at the school assembly, which is the point: reading correctly in a quiet room and reading correctly in front of thirty people are different skills.

Online, we build that with recitation to the teacher without prompting, then to a parent, then recorded. A child who has never recited to anyone but their teacher will not manage it at assembly, however well they read.

What comes after Grade 5

The statute is explicit: Naazrah Quran runs at levels I to V, and from level VI to XII the requirement becomes translation of the Quran, to be completed by Grade 12. So Grade 5 is the end of one subject and the beginning of another, rather than the end of the matter.

Where a family wants structured memorisation rather than translation after that, we will say honestly what the commitment is — daily contact and a revision cycle that never stops — rather than sell a timetable that cannot deliver it.

Questions fréquentes

When do children finish reading the whole Quran?

Under Pakistan's national scheme, by the end of Grade 5. The five years are allocated across the whole Mushaf — the Qaida in Grade 1, the 30th and 1st Para in Grade 2, then Para 2 to 8, Para 9 to 18, and Para 19 to 29. Schools vary in how closely they keep to it.

What happens after Grade 5?

The requirement changes. Naazrah Quran is compulsory at levels I to V; from level VI the 2017 Act requires translation of the Quran, continuing to Grade 12. Some families add memorisation alongside, which is a separate commitment rather than a continuation.

My child is racing to finish. Is that a problem?

It is the standard Grade 5 problem. Pace rises to meet the completion date and the rules erode — madd shortens, ghunnah goes, heavy letters lighten. It sounds better and is less correct. Deliberate slow reading fixes it, and feels like going backwards for a fortnight.

Do you teach Hifz?

We teach the memorisation the curriculum sets for each primary grade, and we will support a wider hifz plan where a family wants one. What we will not do is add it to two sessions a week and call it a plan; memorisation needs daily contact and a revision cycle that does not stop.
