Grade 1 is the Qaida year. Pakistan's national curriculum sets the shapes and sounds of the letters, makharij, the i'rab marks and the etiquette of recitation, with Surah al-Fatihah and Surah al-Ikhlas memorised. Naazrah Quran is compulsory at Grades I–V by statute. We teach it one to one.

Being moved from letters to whole words before the makharij are secure, which sets pronunciation habits that are hard to undo later.

Grade 1 is the Qaida year

In Pakistan this is not left to the school to decide. The Compulsory Teaching of the Holy Quran Act 2017 requires Naazrah Quran — recitation by sighting of the Arabic text — at levels I to V, and the rules made under it set the Qaida as the beginners' book at Grade I. The current national Islamiat curriculum then sets out what a Grade 1 student should be able to do with it.

So the first year is not reading the Mushaf. It is letters, the forms those letters take when joined, the vowel marks, and enough of qalqalah and ghunnah to be familiar with them. Reading of the Mushaf itself begins in Grade 2.

Getting the letters right the first time

Almost everything difficult about Quran teaching later is caused by something skipped here. Arabic has several pairs of letters that an Urdu- or English-speaking child hears as one sound, and a few sets that look identical apart from their dots.

A child who is moved on before those are secure does not simply have a gap; they have a habit, practised daily. Correcting a habit at nine takes far longer than teaching the letter properly at six, which is why we would rather report three weeks spent on the same eight letters than a page count.

One thing the curriculum does not spell out

The Grade 1 outcomes include reading the last four Surahs of the Quran with tajweed — and the curriculum never says which four. Read strictly, the phrase points to the four Surahs at the end of the Mushaf. In common Pakistani usage it is sometimes used for a different, well-known set of four.

They are not the same list, and we are not going to pretend the document settles it. We ask which set a family's school or madrasah means and teach that, rather than assume and have a child arrive at school having learned the wrong four.

Pace at six

Sessions are 45 minutes and one to one — Quran is the one primary subject we do not teach in a group, because pronunciation has to be heard and corrected individually and there is no way to do that four times in a class.

Progress at this age is measured in accuracy rather than in pages. A child who has finished twenty plates of the Qaida and mispronounces four letters has gone backwards, and the cost of that shows up years later rather than now.

How does a child start learning to read the Quran?

With a Qaida. The sequence is the letters and their sounds, the forms they take when joined, then the vowel marks — zabar, zer, pesh, tanween, jazm, tashdeed and madd — and finally short combinations read as words. Reading from the Mushaf follows in Grade 2.

Is Quran teaching compulsory in Pakistani schools?

Yes. The Compulsory Teaching of the Holy Quran Act 2017 requires Naazrah Quran for Muslim students at levels I to V and translation from level VI to XII, and the provinces have their own equivalent legislation. What varies is how thoroughly it is taught, not whether it is required.

Which Qaida do you use?

Usually the Noorani Qaida, and we will work from whichever edition a family already owns. No critical edition exists and plate numbering differs between printings, so we teach the sequence rather than the page numbers and tell you where your child has reached.

Are female teachers available?

Yes, for every subject including Quran, at no additional cost. You can request a female teacher at enrolment. Quran is taught one to one, so the teacher assigned is the teacher your child works with each session.
