Rivers, rock and the water cycle
Erosion, transport and deposition are one system observed at different points along a river, and Grade 8 expects students to explain a landform by naming which process dominates where. The rock cycle sits alongside it and works the same way — a set of transformations rather than a list of rock types.
Flood management is where physical geography meets a decision, and it is a genuinely contested one. Questions about it reward a student who can weigh costs against benefits rather than recall a list of defences.
Weathering is not erosion
Weathering breaks rock down where it stands; erosion carries the pieces away. Students use the two words interchangeably and lose marks on questions that turn entirely on the distinction.
Freeze-thaw is the clearest anchor. Water expands in a crack and splits the rock with nothing moving anywhere, and once a student has one unambiguous example the pair separate and stay separate.
Development is more than one number
GDP per capita is the indicator students reach for, and on its own it hides more than it shows. Two countries with similar income can differ sharply in literacy, life expectancy and access to clean water.
This year's units on global economic systems and resource interdependence, and the CPEC case study, are where that matters most. A student is expected to notice when the numbers disagree with each other, and the noticing is worth more than any individual statistic they memorise.
Key Stage 3 for internationally schooled students
A British-curriculum school teaches this band from Key Stage 3, whose physical geography names weather and climate including the change from the Ice Age to the present, glaciation, hydrology and coasts, and whose locational knowledge names Russia and the Middle East. The year-by-year order below is Oak National Academy's published sequence rather than a statutory one.
Fieldwork is the one requirement online tutoring cannot fully meet, and we would rather say that plainly than claim otherwise. Collecting data has to happen in a real place; what we can teach remotely is the enquiry either side of it — framing a question data could answer, choosing a sampling method, and presenting and interpreting results, including data a student gathers near home.
