Four kinds of sentence
Grade 2 is where a sentence stops being one thing. Statements, questions, commands and instructions each look different on the page and do different jobs, and a child who can only write statements has one tool for every task.
Instructions are the most useful of the four to practise, because the reader either can or cannot follow them. Feedback is immediate and it is not a matter of opinion, which children of seven find much easier to accept than a teacher's judgement about style.
The 'and … and … and' sentence
A seven-year-old with a story to tell will run the whole thing into one breath, joined with and. It is not a punctuation failure so much as an ordering one: everything happened, so everything goes in, in the order it arrives in memory.
Reading the writing aloud is the quickest fix. Where the child stops to breathe is almost always where the full stop belongs, and hearing their own run-on sentence teaches the rule faster than being told it.
Tense that drifts mid-story
A recount that opens 'Yesterday we went to the park' and continues 'and then I see a dog' is the standard Grade 2 pattern. The child slips into the present as the memory becomes vivid, and does not notice.
We teach the -ed ending as a decision made once, at the start of a piece, rather than word by word. Choosing the tense before writing and checking it afterwards catches most of it, and the habit is worth building now because the same drift reappears in Grade 7 essays.
