The number, and the three underneath it
For the class of 2025, the College Board reports a mean total score of 1029. Underneath that sit a Reading and Writing mean of 521 and a Math mean of 508, from 2,004,965 students who took the SAT at some point during high school. Where a student tested more than once, the most recent score is the one summarised.
The standard deviations are 235 on the total, 121 on Reading and Writing and 126 on Math. Those are the numbers that make point differences interpretable: a 50-point gain is about a fifth of a standard deviation, and a move from the mean to 1400 is over one and a half.
The section gap is small but persistent, and it matters more than its size suggests. Far fewer students meet the College Board's Math readiness benchmark of 530 than meet the Reading and Writing benchmark of 480 — 41% against 64% in this cohort.
Why the average is lower than people expect
Families who look up this number are often startled by it, having absorbed from admissions coverage that scores in the 1400s are normal. They are not normal. They belong to 7% of test takers.
Part of the explanation is who sits the test. Several US states and districts administer the SAT to every pupil during a school day, as part of state assessment rather than as a college application step. That policy pulls the tested population much closer to the whole population of school leavers, and pulls the mean down with it.
This is why comparing a score to the national mean answers a less useful question than it appears to. The mean describes American school leavers who sat a test. It does not describe the group of students applying to any particular university, which is self-selected, better prepared and much smaller.
What the average does not tell you
An average compresses a distribution into a single point and discards the shape, and the shape is where the useful information sits. The class of 2025 distribution has 30% of students in the 800-990 band and 28% in the 1000-1190 band, so the middle of the scale is genuinely crowded — small point differences there move a student past a lot of other people.
At the top it is the reverse. The whole of 1400-1600 holds 7% of the cohort, so the same 100-point gain moves a student past far fewer competitors. Knowing the mean tells you none of this.
The other thing the mean cannot tell you is whether a score is good for your purposes, which is a question about a specific list of universities and their published percentile ranges rather than about the national picture at all.
Reading the average as a candidate outside the US
For a student in Lahore or Dubai, the national mean and the percentile tables built from it describe a reference group they are not in and will not be compared with. Percentiles are computed against US test takers; an overseas applicant is generally read within a separate international pool that is far smaller and considerably more selective.
We do not have a reliable published mean for Pakistani candidates specifically, and we would rather say that than quote a figure we cannot source. What can be said with confidence is structural: students who sit the SAT from Pakistan do so by choice and at their own expense, which makes them a self-selected group, and their percentile against US test takers overstates their standing in the pool they are actually competing in.
The practical instruction that follows is the same one we give every family. Ignore the national average when setting a target. Use the 25th and 75th percentile figures published by the universities on your list, in section C9 of their Common Data Sets, and set the target from those.
