Is 1400 a Good SAT Score?

Yes — 149,767 students in the class of 2025 reached 1400 or above, just 7% of test takers. The harder question is whether the next 100 points are worth chasing.

الإجابة باختصار

Is 1400 a good SAT score?

Yes. Only 7% of the class of 2025 scored 1400 or above. It is competitive nearly everywhere except the handful of universities whose enrolled students cluster in the 1500s.

الإجابة باختصار

Yes. Only 7% of the class of 2025 — 149,767 students out of just over two million — scored 1400 or above. At that level the score has stopped being the weak part of an application at most universities, and further points cost considerably more than the same effort spent elsewhere.

ما الذي يغيّر الإجابة

  • At universities whose enrolled students cluster in the 1500s, 1400 sits at or below the 25th percentile figure and something else in the file has to carry it.
  • An uneven 1400 can still be a problem for a quantitative course if the Math section is the weaker half.
  • For merit scholarships tied to published thresholds, the next 40 points are sometimes worth more in money than in admission probability.
  • For international applicants competing for a smaller allocation of places, 1400 is closer to a baseline than an advantage at the most selective universities.

What 1400 is worth in the national picture

The College Board's own distribution for the class of 2025 puts 149,767 students in the 1400-1600 band — 7% of the 2,004,965 who sat the test. Everything above 1400 is contained in that band, so it is a genuinely small group.

Against a mean of 1029 and a standard deviation of 235, a 1400 sits about 1.6 standard deviations above average. That is the statistical description of a strong score, and it is worth stating plainly because students at this level are frequently told, usually by other students, that 1400 is nothing special.

It is special. It is also, at a specific and small group of universities, unremarkable — and holding both of those facts at once is the whole of an honest answer to this question.

Where 1400 is enough and where it is not

For the great majority of US universities, 1400 is at or above the 75th percentile of enrolled students. In those applications the score is settled: it will not be the reason for a rejection, and no further work on it will improve the outcome.

At the most selective universities — the group whose published middle 50% ranges sit in the 1500s — a 1400 lands at or below the 25th percentile figure. It does not disqualify an applicant, since a quarter of enrolled students are below that figure, but it does mean the transcript, the writing and the recommendations are doing the work.

The way to know which category a given university falls into is not to guess. Look up section C9 of its Common Data Set, which reports the 25th and 75th percentile scores of enrolled first-year students, and compare directly.

Why 1400 to 1500 costs more than 1100 to 1200

Both are 100 points, and they are not remotely the same amount of work. In the middle of the distribution, points come from content: whole categories of question start going right once a topic is finally secure, and progress arrives in blocks.

At 1400 there is very little content left. A student at that level is answering most questions correctly already, so improvement means eliminating error classes one at a time — the misread condition, the sign dropped in transcription, the two minutes spent on a question that should have been abandoned. Each of those is worth a handful of points and each takes weeks to remove.

The retaking evidence points the same way. The largest causal study of SAT retaking found that students in the lower half of the distribution gained roughly four times as much on a second sitting as higher-scoring students, and attributed part of that difference explicitly to ceiling effects. If a 1400 was earned with preparation, the realistic second-sitting gain is small.

When to stop testing

The question a student at 1400 should be asking is not whether they could go higher but what else those hours could buy. Almost every applicant has one part of the file that is visibly weaker than the score, and it is rarely the SAT.

There are two situations where another sitting is clearly worth it. One is a badly uneven split that matters for the intended course. The other is a published merit scholarship threshold sitting just above the current score, where 30 or 40 points converts into money on a stated grid.

Outside those, we tell students at 1400 to stop and write. It is not the advice families expect from a tutoring institute, and it is the right advice more often than not.

أسئلة شائعة

What percentile is a 1400 SAT score?

Around the 93rd among test takers. The College Board's class of 2025 distribution shows 7% of students scoring 1400 or above, so a 1400 is at the bottom edge of that top band. Percentiles quoted against the whole US student population sit slightly higher.

Is 1400 enough for a top 20 university?

It is inside the published range at some and below the 25th percentile figure at others, so the answer varies by institution and by year. Check section C9 of each university's Common Data Set. Where 1400 falls below the range, the application can still work, but the rest of the file has to be genuinely strong.

Should I retake a 1400 to try for 1500?

Only with a specific reason — an uneven split that matters for your course, or a scholarship threshold just out of reach. Average retake gains shrink sharply near the top of the scale, and the same weeks spent on essays and recommendations usually change more about the application.

Is 1400 a good SAT score for an international student?

For most US universities, comfortably. For the most selective ones, it is closer to a baseline than an advantage, because international applicants compete for a much smaller allocation of places. It is a score that keeps a broad list of good universities genuinely open.

Does a 1400 qualify for scholarships?

At universities with published merit grids, frequently yes, and often in a higher award band than 1200 would reach. It is worth reading the actual grids for the universities on your list before deciding whether to test again, since the thresholds are stated and the arithmetic is straightforward.
