How Long a Tutoring Session Should Be
Forty-five minutes at primary, an hour through middle school, ninety for GCSE and SAT. Why one long session for a nine-year-old buys less than two short ones.

The lengths we actually run
These are the defaults, not rules. We move them for individual students, and the direction we move them is almost always shorter and more often rather than longer.
The Digital SAT figure is set by the test itself rather than by attention. The Reading and Writing section is two 32-minute modules and the Maths section two 35-minute modules, so a practice session has to be long enough to contain a full module and still leave time to go through it.

The attention-span rule is folklore
The figure that circulates — one minute of concentration per year of age — has no serious source behind it, and nobody who repeats it can name one. It is worth saying plainly, because a great many decisions about children get made from it.
What is observable, and more useful, is narrower. The productive part of a session is the part where the student is writing. In a ninety-minute session with a nine-year-old, that part is usually under forty minutes; the rest is listening, drifting and being brought back. So the honest question is not how long a child can concentrate. It is what proportion of the paid time is work.
Why two forty-fives beat one ninety
The advantage is the gap, not the length. Between Monday and Thursday a child forgets some of Monday, and Thursday opens by retrieving it. That effortful retrieval is the act that fixes the material. A single ninety-minute block contains no gap, so nothing is ever retrieved — everything is still fresh, and being fresh feels exactly like understanding.
There is a second, more mundane advantage. Two occasions means homework set twice and checked twice. One long session a week means a student can lose six days and only the tutor notices, on the seventh.
When a long session is the right call
Exam season inverts the advice. From about six weeks out, the useful session is a full paper under timed conditions followed by a mark-through, and that is a two-hour job that cannot be cut in half. A student who has only ever worked in forty-five minute pieces has never rehearsed the stamina a ninety-minute paper needs.
Time zones force it too. Our weekday classes run 14:00–22:00 PKT and weekends 10:00–20:00 PKT, which leaves a family in Canada or Australia a narrow window. For those families one longer weekend session is sometimes the only workable shape, and we say that it is a compromise rather than pretending it is the ideal.
Length is not the variable that matters most
Frequency beats duration, and what happens between sessions beats both. Forty-five minutes twice a week with work done in between will move a student further than ninety minutes weekly with nothing done in between, and it is not close.
So when a family asks whether to buy a longer session, the more useful question is usually whether anything is being attempted between the current ones. If the answer is no, a longer session will simply be a longer lecture.

Is a two-hour session ever a good idea?
Only in exam season, and only when the content is a full timed paper plus its review. Two hours of teaching is beyond nearly every student. Two hours made of a 1 hour 30 paper and a thirty-minute mark-through is a completely different task, and it works.
My child says an hour is too long. Is that a length problem?
Usually not. It is more often a difficulty problem. Work that is too hard makes any length unbearable and work at the right level makes an hour pass quickly. Check how many questions in the last set came out right before shortening the session.
Does a small group need longer than one-to-one?
A little. In a group of four the tutor cycles between students, so the same content takes longer in the room. The student also gets thinking time while somebody else answers, which one-to-one does not give and which many students need more than they need airtime.
How long is a demo class?
The same length as the class it belongs to, because a shortened demo shows you a shape that does not exist. A parent watching a real ninety-minute GCSE session learns more about whether it will suit their child than any description of it can convey.
