How Feedback on Writing Works Online
Margin comments are the weakest feedback there is. How a shared document, a talk-through and one live rewrite turn marking into something a student can act on.
الإجابة باختصار
How do online tutors give feedback on writing?
On a shared document, with the comments spoken aloud rather than left in the margin, and with one paragraph rewritten during the lesson while the tutor watches it happen.
الإجابة باختصار
The essay goes into a shared document, the tutor marks it in two passes and leaves no more than three comments, then talks it through live while the student can answer back. One paragraph is rewritten during the lesson. Feedback lands within about two days, while the student still remembers their choices.
ما الذي يغيّر الإجابة
- A timed, handwritten essay has to be photographed rather than typed, because handwriting speed is part of what the exam is measuring.
- Feedback on structure needs the whole piece; feedback on sentences needs one paragraph, and mixing the two in a single session teaches neither.
- A student writing for an exam board is marked against published objectives, and feedback that does not point at them is opinion.
- Turnaround matters more than depth: detailed comments a week later are read as though a stranger wrote the essay.
Margin comments are the weakest feedback ever invented
Develop this point tells a student to do the thing they have just demonstrated they cannot do. The same goes for be more analytical, explain further and needs more depth. Each names a symptom and none names a move, which is why a student reads them, feels vaguely told off, and writes the next essay exactly the same way.
Spoken feedback can be argued with, and that is its entire advantage. The student says I did not know how, or I thought that was analysis, and the tutor finds out what the actual obstacle is. Nine times out of ten it is not the one the essay appeared to show.
Two passes, and never more than three comments
The first pass produces no writing at all. The tutor reads the piece straight through and underlines every place they had to read something twice. That map of where a reader's attention broke is not the same as a map of errors, and it is far more useful, because it shows the essay as its examiner will meet it rather than as a checklist.
The second pass chooses at most three things, ordered by how many marks each is costing. A page covered in red is less feedback than three comments, not more: twenty corrections cannot be held in a student's head, so none of them are, and the student learns only that their writing is bad in some general way.
The talk-through is the lesson
Ten to fifteen minutes with the document on screen, and the student reading their own sentences aloud. Reading aloud finds a large share of the problems before the tutor has said anything: the sentence that runs out of breath, the word used three times in four lines, the paragraph that arrives at its verb far too late.
Then the one question that only works while the writing is fresh: what did you mean here? A student who wrote the sentence yesterday can tell you, and the gap between what they meant and what they wrote is the whole lesson. A student who wrote it a fortnight ago will shrug, and rightly.
Rewrite one paragraph now, not at home
Rewrites set as homework do not happen, and when they do happen they are performed rather than thought about. So the weakest paragraph is rewritten inside the lesson, with the tutor silent except to ask what comes next, and the two versions put side by side on screen when it is done.
That comparison is the part students remember months later. It is also the only reliable evidence that the feedback was understood, which no amount of nodding at a marked script ever provides.
Typed practice and handwritten practice are different exercises
Most school English examinations are still handwritten and still timed, and a typed essay hides both of the failures that cost most in the hall. It hides running out of time, because typing is faster and the word count arrives sooner. It hides the way handwriting and thinking both degrade in the last ten minutes, when the conclusion is written by a tired hand.
So we alternate. Redrafting work is typed, because redrafting on paper is miserable and nobody does it twice. Exam work is handwritten under the clock and photographed, one page per photograph, laid flat in daylight. The essays that arrive that way tell us things the typed ones never do.
أسئلة شائعة
How quickly is marked work returned?
Within about two days, and that is a deliberate constraint rather than a service promise. The value of feedback falls off sharply once the student has forgotten the decisions they made while writing, because the most useful question a tutor can ask is what they were trying to do in a particular sentence.
Can you mark a handwritten essay?
Yes, and for exam practice we prefer it. Photograph one page per image, flat on a table in daylight rather than at an angle in a dark room, and send them in order. The tutor marks on the images and the talk-through works exactly as it does with a typed document.
Should my child type or handwrite at home?
Both, for different purposes. Typing for drafting, restructuring and anything that will be revised, because moving a paragraph is trivial. Handwriting for anything timed, because speed, stamina and legibility under pressure are part of what the exam tests and cannot be practised on a keyboard.
Do you use the exam board's mark scheme?
Yes, and we check which specification first, because boards number and word their objectives differently. The useful step is turning an objective into a question a student can answer: instead of quoting the wording about analysing language, ask which word the writer chose over an obvious alternative, and what the choice does.
Is essay feedback better one-to-one than in a group?
The talk-through is better one-to-one, because it is about this student's sentences. But reading two other students' opening paragraphs is one of the fastest ways to see what a strong one does, and nobody learns that from their own work alone. We use the group for models and openings, and one-to-one for the detailed marking.
