Malaysia Time is UTC+8 across the whole country — Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak — with no daylight saving. Neither country changes its clocks, so the three-hour gap is fixed. Note that Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu run a Friday–Saturday weekend while the other states run Saturday–Sunday, which changes which of our weekend slots a family should be looking at.

Only the first half of our day works

Malaysia is three hours ahead of Pakistan, so our teaching day runs into the Malaysian night. Our published block of 14:00–22:00 PKT is 17:00–01:00 MYT, and the second half of that is not a class anyone should take.

The usable window is 14:00–18:00 PKT, which is 17:00–21:00 in Kuala Lumpur — straight after school and after dinner. We book Malaysian students there, and we decline the later slots rather than letting a family discover the problem in week three.

UPSR and PT3 no longer exist

This is the single most common out-of-date belief we meet from Malaysian families, and from providers still advertising against it. UPSR was abolished with effect from 2022, and the Cabinet agreed to abolish PT3 on 2 June 2022, so 2022 was the first year without it. Neither examination is held.

What replaced them is school-based assessment, plus UASA at the end of the academic session. The important nuance is that UASA is set and administered by each individual school under Ministry guidelines — it is not a centralised national examination, so papers, difficulty and marking vary between schools.

In January 2026 the Ministry activated the National Education Advisory Council to study a possible revival of both examinations. Nothing has been reinstated. We will not sell preparation for an examination that does not currently exist, and we would treat any claim that it is coming back as unconfirmed until it is announced.

SPM is the examination the year is built around

SPM is Malaysia's single high-stakes terminal school examination, sat at the end of Form 5 and run by the Malaysian Examinations Board. For SPM 2025, 413,372 candidates sat across 3,350 centres, with oral tests from early November, science practicals and listening tests mid-month, and written papers running from late November into late December.

That timing shifts with the academic calendar, so it is worth confirming each year rather than assuming. What does not shift is the shape of the preparation season: the second half of the school year, in slots that for us are the early part of the afternoon.

A second, separate market in the international schools

Malaysia's international-school sector is large and growing quickly — 348 schools with 111,185 students as at July 2024, an increase of 67% over the decade. Those students sit Cambridge IGCSE and A Level, or the IB, on a completely different calendar from SPM.

For us that is the more natural fit, because it is the same Cambridge syllabuses we teach into the Gulf and the UK. A Malaysian IGCSE student and an Emirati one are preparing for the same papers in the same series, and the only real difference is which of our hours they book.

How we work with Malaysian families

Cambridge IGCSE and GCSE Mathematics run as 90-minute sessions, two to four a week, in groups of no more than four. International-curriculum support runs one-to-one at 60 minutes, two to five times a week.

The school year runs January to December, which means the Malaysian academic calendar and our own peak seasons are offset from most of the markets we teach into. We plan Malaysian students against their own calendar rather than against the northern-hemisphere one, and the Core-versus-Extended decision on Cambridge 0580 is settled in the first weeks, on the evidence of a full timed past series.
