What Is a Specification Code?
The short reference that names one exact qualification from one board. How to read 1MA1/1H, where the code is printed, and why 0580 and 0607 are not alike.
Specification code
A specification code is a short alphanumeric reference identifying one exact version of one qualification from one exam board, such as 1MA1 or 0580.

The part before the slash is the qualification and the part after it is the component. 1MA1 names the specification; 1 is the paper number and H is the tier. Every board uses the same anatomy with different characters: AQA writes 8300/1H, OCR writes J560/04, and Cambridge writes 0580/42, where 4 is the paper and 2 is the variant sat in a particular part of the world. Knowing which half of a code is the qualification and which half is the paper is enough to find the right past paper on any board's website.
Where the code is printed
It appears on the front cover of every question paper, usually in the box alongside the date and the time allowed. It is on the statement of entry the school issues before the series. It is on the first page of the specification document itself, and it is embedded in the filename of nearly every past paper a board publishes, which is why a folder of downloads can be checked without opening any of them.
If a student cannot find it, the exams officer has it, and so does the subject teacher. It takes one question, and asking it in September is a great deal cheaper than discovering the answer in April.
Why the version matters more than the subject name
'A GCSE maths past paper' is not a well-formed request, because several different qualifications answer to that description. Pearson publishes 1MA1, the GCSE taken in England, and 4MA1, the International GCSE, which is a different qualification with a different paper structure. Cambridge publishes both 0580 Mathematics and 0607 International Mathematics, which are separate syllabuses with different content and very different question styles.
Retired specifications add a second trap. Papers from the pre-2017 English GCSE are still online, still indexed by search engines, and are graded A*–G against content that has since changed. They look plausible, they are free, and a student who works through a stack of them has practised the wrong exam. The code, plus the year printed beside it, settles the question in a second.
The pattern each board follows
The codes look random and are not. Each board runs a house style, and once you have seen a few you can usually tell the board and roughly the level of a qualification from the code alone.
These are observable conventions rather than published rules, so treat them as a way of recognising a code at a glance rather than as something to rely on when the answer matters. When it does matter, the specification document itself states the code and the qualification title together on its first page.

How do I find out my exam board and specification code?
Look at the statement of entry the school issues, or at the front cover of any past paper the class has used, where the code is printed with the date. If neither is to hand, ask the subject teacher or the exams officer. It is a one-line answer and everything else about revision depends on it.
What is the difference between 1MA1 and 4MA1?
1MA1 is Pearson Edexcel's GCSE Mathematics, taken mainly in England. 4MA1 is their International GCSE Mathematics A, taken in international schools. They are separate qualifications with different paper structures, so past papers from one are not proper practice for the other even though the mathematics overlaps heavily.
What is the difference between 0580 and 0607?
0580 is Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics and 0607 is Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics. They are different syllabuses with different content and different assessment styles, 0607 including extended investigative work that 0580 does not set. Which one you sit is decided by the school's entry, so check before downloading anything.
Does a specification code ever change?
Yes, whenever a qualification is reformed. The old code is retired and a new one issued, while the old papers stay online indefinitely. This is why the year printed on a paper matters as much as the code, and why a paper that looks right can still belong to a syllabus that no longer exists.
